It is too soon to be sure, but I think that the departure, along with the final shot at dirty politics, of one of our superiors in city government,may be the last straw for some diehards who were still clinging to the belief that all this "development" was going to lead to good times, down the road. If one of the participants in this comedy of errors has publicly demonstrated that no, there is no renaissance, and there ain't gonna be any renaissance, that should be enough to convince anyone left who is actually paying for all this nonsense.
I've seen some more houses go up for sale, houses that I never thought would go on the market because the owners were committed to living here. I'm not sure yet, because in one case, the nonsense with the school buildings (Oneida is condemned, Elmer is in use, no Oneida is fine after all, Elmer needs to be torn down) may be a factor, but it could be that the owners just could not take that one-two punch, continuing foolishness with the schools and the blatant demonstration that the taxes are way too high, they are way too high for the benefit of mostly people who don't even live here, and anybody who isn't in on it no longer wants any part of it.
It's kind of like if you were in a leaky rowboat and had a chance to jump for shore, but by the act of jumping you swamp the other occupants. That's what this woman has done, by buying a house outside the city, it may have set off a chain reaction.

What began in Schenectady in the early 90's when GE moved out, is now happening across the nation.

Upstate New York is not alone as the laughing stock.  The rest of the country is waking up to what Schenectady has been living for decades.  The difference is, Schenectady was subsidized by State and Federal money for those decades, so the government services were funded.  With that money drying up, the decay will happen much more rapidly in other municipalities.  

Maybe the rest of the country will adopt the Schenectady technique of redefining decay to mean renaissance.
