SCHENECTADY — A man was hit Thursday morning by a CSX freight train, police said.
He suffered a serious injury to his arm and leg and was taken to Ellis Hospital, Public Safety Commissioner Wayne Bennett said.
After CSX workers called police to report the accident, Schenectady and Rotterdam police, sheriff's deputies and a State Police helicopter searched the area, Bennett said.
The man, whom Bennett did not identify, was found at Perry Street and Campbell Avenue, across from Hillhurst Park.
He was able to make his way from the tracks behind the park in the Bellevue section of the city not far from General Electric headquarters.
Bennett said, based on his observation, the man might have been under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

There's a 150 ft cliff between the park and the tracks.
I was thinking the same thing, that is a pretty good ways down. There is a trail back there but I have no idea if there is any safe passage down that cliff.

They said he came up from the tracks after being hit by the train.

If I owned a fence company, I'd hire a lobbying firm to push legislation for mandating fences for all potential dangers - to protect the stupid. Not to make money of course.
Hell, just give the lawmaker of your choice a big donation directly. Maybe the guy flew up to where they found him after being struck, like they used to do in cartoons? Did the workers who called it in mention whether the guy went airborne on impact? Not likely, but we didn't see it, anything is possible.
SCHENECTADY : Man on tracks survives as train passes over him Victim held for mental health evaluation BY STEVEN COOK Gazette Reporter A local man was struck and injured by a passing train Thursday morning on tracks near Hillhurst Park, police said. The man survived, even though he was struck as the 40-car train passed directly over him. The man had been lying directly between the rails, Public Safety Commissioner Wayne Bennett said. The man, age 44, from Schenectady, was even able to get up and walk away. Police and paramedics fi nally caught up with him a short time later on Campbell Avenue, Bennett said. He had arm and leg injuries. Bennett did not identify the man because he was taken into custody for a mental health evaluation. That the man survived was remarkable, Bennett said. “Every once in a while, you see something that should have ended up far different than it did,” Bennett said. “He was very fortunate.” The incident happened just before 10 a.m., Bennett said. The train’s conductor spotted the man ahead, lying between the tracks, and was able to react quickly enough to slow the train’s speed to about 20 mph. The conductor, though, was unable to stop the train completely, and the train passed over the man. Once the train passed, the man, bleeding, got up and walked off toward Hillhurst Park, Bennett said. By that time, state and city police had been notifi ed, with officers sent to the area, Bennett said. Air support was also requested to help find the man, but ultimately not needed. Police searched the tracks and paths through the wooded area toward the park, police spokesman Sgt. Matthew Dearing said. Surrounding police departments were also notified. He was finally spotted at about 10:30 a.m. in front of a residence on Campbell Avenue. Despite what he’d been through, Dearing said, the man wasn’t very talkative. “I believe he was pretty quiet. He didn’t really say too much,” Dearing said. He was then taken to Ellis Hospital for treatment of his wounds, but also taken into custody by police under the mental hygiene law to determine if any mental health issues exist. Exactly what led the man to be on the tracks was unclear. Police are looking into possibilities that include suicide attempt or whether he was under the infl uence of drugs or alcohol. The train’s conductor confirmed that the man taken into custody was the man on the tracks. Once police determined no one else was struck, the train was allowed to go on its way, Bennett said. Bennett identified the train as a CSX train. A spokeswoman from the company, though, found no record of the incident. She also noted that other railroads also operate in the area.
