A detective with more than two decades on the job was suspended last year for improperly running a license plate check for his friend, personal information that was then passed to a Rotterdam man who allegedly used it to firebomb the home and vehicle of his former girlfriend's new boyfriend.

The details of the police officer's actions are detailed in pretrial court documents related to the criminal case of Lawrence Ahrens, a 33-year-old Rotterdam man who remains jailed on 48 criminal charges, including arson, criminal possession of a weapon and attempted arson. He has pleaded not guilty to all counts.

The friend of the city police investigator, according to the court papers, "gave a description of the vehicle and a false story that the vehicle was being used to harass his girlfriend."

One time I called some woman regarding business matter. Late I learned that apparently the bf saw my number on her phone and was curious as to who I was. The next thing you know I am getting several hangups that evening well past 11pm. Finally I hit *69 and it goes to NYS Police HQ. I finally demanded to speak to an officer. That night I had a major from internal affairs at my house taking a full report. This was by 2am.

Turns out the jealous trooper BF had his trooper dispatch buddy phoning me to try to figure who out who I was and why I was calling the GF (again, it was business during business hours)

In the end the trooper was disciplined and so was the trooper dispatcher. All over stupid and unwarranted jealousy. Abuse of authority. Dumb, dumb dumb. I did not press harassment charges or anything. It was all foolishness,

This was maybe 12 years ago.

Human behavior is why we should not trust the government. Why? Because the government is made up of people- all fallible like you and me and the next guy.

Excellent point, GB, I understand when some young people want to believe that "The Government" has special knowledge and powers and wisdom that the citizenry don't, but when people get up in years, there is no excuse for not facing the reality that people are people.
