Guns more than double other methods of suicide in the USA.
Many teen suicides are known to be a "spur of the moment" event.  A guy gets dumped by
his girlfriend, so to fix her he shoots himself.
(Men overwhelmingly prefer the gun, while women opt for poison).
Without the readily available gun, he would never take his life and if the event is interrupted,
he never again attempts suicide.

No doubt, those who are serious about taking their life, will use other methods, but there is a
finality of a gunshot that isn't always present in suffocating/hanging, or poison.

Guns injure or kill 10,000 children in the U.S. every year

Injuries from firearms send more than 7,000 kids to the hospital annually, an average of 20 per day.
Among those admitted to the hospital, 6 percent die from their injuries.

NBC News

Good Gun Laws can protect all of us.  An example: NY's SAFE ACT
You are required to safely store your gun if you live with someone who has been convicted
of a felony or domestic violence crime, has been involuntarily committed, or is currently under
an order of protection.

Hey look!

Boxy is trying to use NBC again!

It's not like they  selectively edit video or take a subject out of context or leave out any facts in order to advance their progressive leftist agenda.

Oh wait....Yes they do.

So let's get this story from another news org.....Say....I dunno....CBS.

I mean, I could just go right to 'Pediatrics' and post it from there, but I want to show how terrible Boxy is trying to cherry pick and how crappy NBC news has become.

Firearms hospitalize about 20 U.S. kids a day: Study

Firearm injuries send about 20 U.S. children to the hospital each day, a new study reveals.

The research, which was published on Jan. 27 in Pediatrics, looked at a nationally-representative sample of hospitalizations at more than 4,000 medical centers that occurred in 2009 for children and adolescents under 20 years of age.

The researchers identified 7,391 hospitalizations in this group that were due to firearm injuries. About 84 percent of shooting injuries involved teens between 15 and 19 years old. An overwhelming 89 percent of the patients were male. The firearm injury rate for black males was more than 10 times the rate for white males.

A) Since when are 15-19yo considered 'children'? and B) Looks like the vast majority of firearm injury are black teens shooting each other, bet those guns doing it are all legal too. I'd also bet that 90%+ was done with pistols and not the scary 'assault weapons' you fear so much.

Let's continue....

Quoted Text
"These data highlight the toll of gun-related injuries that extends beyond high-profile cases, and those children and adolescents who die before being hospitalized," Dr. John Leventhal, a professor of pediatrics at Yale School of Medicine in New Haven, said in a press release.

The majority of the hospitalized adolescents were injured during an assault. But, for children under 10 years old, 75 percent of the injuries were due to unintentional or accidental firearm injuries.

I'd say 'nice try' to you Boxy, but you're terrible at cherry picking and not everyday can be Sandyhook, no matter how hard you try.

I have no trouble with CBS, NBC, ABC or PBS for a source.

I just now learned that Bucky is aghast at WHITE children being shot, but seems to reach an
"AH HA" moment when it's BLACK children who are the victims of guns.
(I didn't figure you for a racist, but I've been wrong before)
Children... those under 14 by some states, or under 18 in others unless 'emancipated'.
As compared to adults 18 or 21 and over.

I guess I should have gotten my information from CBS or ABC so that Bucky would be more comfortable
with it.
How about the NY Times?
American Academy of Pediatrics?
Harvard Medical School?
Brigham and Women’s Hospital?
University of Michigan School of Medicine?
Johns Hopkins Center for Gun Policy and Research?
They find:
"More Guns in U.S. Homes, More Kids Getting Shot"
http://news.discovery.com/human/life/more-guns-in-us-homes-more-kids-getting-shot-131026.htm
Quoted Text
~ The number of children wounded or killed by gunshots has been climbing in recent years and
states with high gun-ownership rates also tend to have lots of childhood firearm injuries,

Quoted Text
~ The new report out today by a Boston medical student and his advisor at Harvard Medical
School provides some intriguing, and disturbing, trends. With nearly 7,500 children wounded and 500
killed each year, they found that the big problem is actually handguns.
“Our data shows that handguns are responsible for more hospitalizations and in-hospital deaths than
any other firearm type,”

Quoted Text
~ Madenci and Christopher Weldon, professor of surgery at the Harvard Medical School, compared
household gun ownership and childhood gun violence across the 50 U.S. states.
They used figures from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, a database of personal
health data maintained by the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta since 1993.
Between 1997 and 2009, hospitalizations from gunshot wounds increased from 4,270 to 7,730,
while in-hospital deaths rose from 317 to 503.

Quoted Text
~ “Based on our research, we know that there is a clear correlation
between household gun ownership (and gun safety practices) and childhood gunshot
wounds in the home on a large scale,”
Madenci said in an email to Discovery News.
“It’s consistent with general theory which is that greater exposure leads to greater risk,”
said Daniel Webster, professor and director of the Johns Hopkins Center for Gun Policy and
Research.

Quoted Text
Why don't we have more information about gun violence and gun deaths in America???
While such a conclusion may seem obvious, epidemiological research in this field has been
lacking because of pressure from some members of Congress to limit federally funded gun
research for the past two decades.
Webster said that Congress has eliminated federal funding for research into the causes of
gun violence since the early 1990s under pressure from the National Rifle Association.

President Obama used executive powers to restore funding after the Newtown shootings,
and the National Institutes of Health has just released its first request for applications for
studies in this field.

Gun Statistics?

BEARING ARMS
Examining the gun industry’s influence and the availability of firearms in America

Quoted Text
They die in the households of police officers and drug dealers, in broken homes and close-knit
families, on rural farms and in city apartments. Some adults whose guns were used had tried to store
them safely; others were grossly negligent. Still others pulled the trigger themselves, accidentally
fracturing their own families while cleaning a pistol or hunting.

And there are far more of these innocent victims than official records show.

A New York Times review of hundreds of child firearm deaths found that accidental shootings
occurred roughly twice as often as the records indicate,
because of idiosyncrasies in how
such deaths are classified by the authorities. The killings of Lucas, Cassie and Alex, for instance,
were not recorded as accidents. Nor were more than half of the 259 accidental firearm deaths of
children under age 15 identified by The Times in eight states where records were available.

As a result, scores of accidental killings are not reflected in the official statistics that have framed
the debate over how to protect children from guns.

The rifle association’s lobbying arm recently posted on its Web site a claim that adult criminals
who mishandle firearms — as opposed to law-abiding gun owners — are responsible for most
fatal accidents involving children. But The Times’s review found that a vast majority of cases
revolved around children’s access to firearms, with the shooting either self-inflicted or done by
another child.

A common theme in the cases examined by The Times, in fact, was the almost magnetic attraction
of firearms among boys. In all but a handful of instances, the shooter was male. Boys also accounted
for more than 80 percent of the victims.

Time and again, boys could not resist handling a gun, disregarding repeated warnings by adults
and, sometimes, their own sense that they were doing something wrong.

A tragedy no doubt, but what law on the books or even being considered would have prevented an idiot like this guy from buying the .22?
If he didn't have any documented mental issues or felony conviction, I would think nothing.. The lockup law is a great idea, but unenforceable UNTIL something like this happens...

The map is not without exceptions and outliers, but the general trend is clear:
States with more gun regulations had lower rates of gun deaths,
and
states with less gun laws had higher gun death rates,
both in terms of suicide and homicide.

but does it prove that gun deaths are the only way that death occurs...because just comparing gun deaths to themselves
doesn't fix the murder/assault rate...or does it?

humans will use kitchen items/pillows/fists/cars/drugs(both legal and illegal) etc etc.....

is it the death issue?
is it the murder issue?
is it the assault issue?
is it the accident issue?

guns are not the boogie man.....humans are...it's just what we are

Again, how is that enforceable? It's about as enforceable as the fireworks laws...
law enforcement is either overburdened in certain areas or apathetic...The vast majority of enforcement of a law like that will be after something bad happens.
The NRA already promotes gun safety

That, in addition to classes

The "good" gun laws?? not so much

And how do you enforce it box, random house visits from the Gestapo?  I agree in some cases firearms should be locked up or ammo kept separately but that is up to the owner of the firearm not the government, the owner needs to use common sense as laws can't fix stupidity.

Though statistics prove time and again that disarming a free people leads to more violent crime and the potential for mass government democide, it hasn’t stopped President Barrack Obama and his Congressional entourage from doing everything in their power to make it more difficult for Americans to legally own firearms.

Citing the Sandy Hook mass shooting last year, democrats on the hill have claimed that we must restrict gun ownership and strip the Second Amendment for the safety of our children and the general public.

But a new report commissioned by the White House titled Priorities for Research to Reduce the Threat of Firearm-related Violence suggests what many self defense gun proponents have been saying for years. The report, ordered under one of President Obama’s 23 Executive Orders signed in the wake of the Sandy Hook incident, asked the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the National Research Council and other federal agencies to identify the “most pressing problems in firearms violence.”

To the surprise of the authors and those who would no doubt have used the report to further restrict access to personal defense firearms, the study found that gun ownership actually saves lives and those who have a firearm at their disposal improve their chances of survival and reduce their chance of injury in the event they are confronted by a violent criminal:

Almost all national survey estimates indicate that defensive gun uses by victims are at least as common as offensive uses by criminals, with estimates of annual uses ranging from about 500,000 to more than 3 million per year…

The estimate of 3 million defensive uses per year is based on an extrapolation from a small number of responses taken from more than 19 national surveys. The former estimate of 108,000 is difficult to interpret because respondents were not asked specifically about defensive gun use.

A different issue is whether defensive use of guns, however numerous or rare they may be, are effective in preventing injury to the gun wielding crime victim. Studies that directly assessed the effect of actual defensive uses of guns (i.e., incidents in which a gun was “used” by the crime victim in the sense of attacking or threatening an offender) have found consistently lower injury rates among gun-using crime victims compared with victims who used other self protective strategies.

Full Study available at the National Academy of Sciences
