Quoted from Madam X
Schenectady is Schenectady, and if the people don't want the new meters, and our old ones still function, there is no reason to change to anything,
because some idiot thinks it is the future. Spend all that money downtown, and then inconvenience those who might go there? Stupid, stupid, stupid. Is the trend toward paying for parking anywhere else? Of course not! We see more and more drive-through businesses.
I wish they would copy other cities that keep up the parks, pave the roads, plow the snow, replace broken pipes, do their real jobs.

Like it or not -- the trend has been to eliminate on-street parking all together and replace it with parking garages or pay parking lots.  That has been happening ALL over the country for over two decades.  So to answer your question -- YES -- the trend has LONG been toward paying for parking.

You don't see too many drive-thru businesses in a downtown.

And you obviously missed the whole point that the old parking meters are much more costly to maintain and even more costly to replace when they break down completely -- and they do.

You like to throw out words like idiot and stupid -- yet you really don't know what you are talking about.

Even if it were "the trend all over the country", that would not be a good enough reason to adopt it here, because the government is supposed to serve the people, not follow trends.
This is the wrong move for all the reasons that intelligent people have posted here.

Of course you don't see drive-through in a downtown, who said that? The 'trend" is to shop where there is plentiful, free parking and drive-throughs, and has been that way for ages, and will be into the foreseeable future.

Gee, where are the garages or pay parking at the places where the stores are, where people shop?

Care to explain why Nisky didn't install a parking garage for the new Shop rite, or the other new shopping center (stupid idea) where the little Walmart is going?   If it's the so called "trend" as you claim, where's the pay parking or garage at the old Mohawk Mall?  Ditto the malls, which I understand were built quite a while ago.

But places like Schenectady, HOW could a downtown thrive when people have to pay for parking?  Come on, especially in Schenectady, DV, people CANNOT AFFORD TO PAY for parking!!!!!!!!!

Do you REALLY think people can afford to either pay for parking OR pay for a garage?   I trust you have the brains to know that the garage was not free, it was taxpayer money.

Interesting is that when there were no pay parking lots, and when there was no parking garage, in those days downtown thrived.   Who are butt are you trying to kiss, obviously suggesting/supporting some millionaire developer would get money, build a garage, not pay taxes on it, homeowners would pay, the developer would get richer and give more money to McCheese and plex

You don't see any drive-thru businesses at the malls or at that Mohawk Commons.

Downtown, you don't see ANY business - drive thru or not!

What a great idea.
Charge us to park in a place that we have already paid for ten times over?
We are TAXPAYERS and CITIZENS, not "CUSTOMERS", or tourists.
"Sometimes you gotta spend money to make money"
You are truly warped.
"Make money"? Laws are supposed to protect the public, and provide a higher quality of life, not provide a privileged few with an income that far exceeds their station in life.
"Law", is not commerce.

Years ago there were fewer cars, too --- and Dodgers played in Brooklyn.  You choose to live in the past and wish for the past to some how come back --- I choose to live in the present and prepare for the future.

Schenectady is not like "other cities".  The poverty rate is high, taxes are high, and the median income is low.  It is not like Schenectady has a financial district with executives making six figure salaries driving in and out of downtown.  Many around Schenectady are barely getting by and are on some form of social welfare.

These politicians are trying to get blood out of a stone.  They are nickel and diming those people living on the margins.

Yeah, well, for your information, years ago there were FAR MORE people in the city, which means FAR MORE CARS downtown!   DUH!    Sure many families have two cars, BUT that does NOT result in more cars going downtown.  As you don't have a family, you won't understand finances and household budgets, a husband and a wife are NOT EACH going to drive to the same destination in separate cars.   AND remember too that today there are FAR FEWER people in the city and many on low incomes and cannot afford a car

And remember too, years ago virtually ALL cars would be downtown at the same time, there was only ONE night for shopping, it was Thursday night.

Years ago there were FAR MORE PEOPLE and FAR MORE CARS in downtown AT THE SAME TIME, it was Thursday night!  And there were fewer parking spaces downtown back then as well.

Today, no stores downtown, fewer people, fewer cars.   No need for parking meters at all!   No need for parking garages.   Save the tax dollars and lower the taxes

I thought parking meters were installed to prevent people from parking all day
long, blocking customers from going to local businesses.

Parking meters didn't kill downtown.

The stupid fancy reconfiguring and making less parking available killed downtown retail.

Woolworth's used to have over a dozen diagonal parking spots. You could always find a spot.

Now, I'd rather be poked in the eye with a stick than try to park for 5 minutes to run into Bombers.

This is exactly the problem, people who are self-styled "planners" making decrees such as "like it or not" referring to governmental policies in your owncity. They are only dangerous when they are elected, or worse, they get paid by the taxpayers to inflict their silly notions and half-baked ideas on us. Itreally should be illegal for people who don't even live here to have any influence at all on how are taxes are spent, and in many instances it is. Residency requirements were put in place for a reason, a good reason. When you see them being routinely flouted, it is a sure sign that a city is on the rocks.
Shouldn't Morris' Patroon award be rescinded? I never heard of a recipient taking off like that, except perhaps to retire to a warmer client in old age.
The jobs at Proctor's should be civil service merit system.

There are a lot of "other cities" with poverty issues and low median incomes.

As far as taxes, one way to lower them is to lower expenses and the new system will cost less to operate and maintain.

The new system will be an expense to taxpayers, and costing less to maintain and operate will not do us any good as there is a cost being passed along. If your people were so knowledgeable, Schenectady wouldn't be in such poor shape. The fact that Mr. Cuthbert was escorted away from his job by police shows that no one is serious about helping the city or the taxpayers. McCheese is merely desperately trying to stave off control boards to keep the downtown Festival of Cash Grabbing money pit going.

Not only is this a bad idea due to the cost of the new meters but has anyone thought of the elderly and disabled who will have to get to
the meter, then go back to their car to place the ticket in their window especially in bad weather? Or for anyone when it's icy?
