WASHINGTON (AP) — The Justice Department secretly obtained two months of telephone records of reporters and editors for The Associated Press in what the news cooperative's top executive called a "massive and unprecedented intrusion" into how news organizations gather the news.

The records obtained by the Justice Department listed incoming and outgoing calls, and the duration of each call, for the work and personal phone numbers of individual reporters, general AP office numbers in New York, Washington and Hartford, Conn., and the main number for AP reporters in the House of Representatives press gallery, according to attorneys for the AP.

In all, the government seized those records for more than 20 separate telephone lines assigned to AP and its journalists in April and May of 2012. The exact number of journalists who used the phone lines during that period is unknown but more than 100 journalists work in the offices whose phone records were targeted on a wide array of stories about government and other matters.

In a letter of protest sent to Attorney General Eric Holder on Monday, AP President and Chief Executive Officer Gary Pruitt said the government sought and obtained information far beyond anything that could be justified by any specific investigation. He demanded the return of the phone records and destruction of all copies.

"There can be no possible justification for such an overbroad collection of the telephone communications of The Associated Press and its reporters. These records potentially reveal communications with confidential sources across all of the newsgathering activities undertaken by the AP during a two-month period, provide a road map to AP's newsgathering operations, and disclose information about AP's activities and operations that the government has no conceivable right to know," Pruitt said.  http://bigstory.ap.org/article/govt-obtains-wide-ap-phone-records-probe

National security trumps the first amendment's guarantee to a free press.

So lets count what constitutional rights have been openly attacked since 9-11.

1st - free press
2nd - right to bear arms
4th - illegal search and seizure - Patriot Act
5th - captal punishment withou due process - droning Americans
6th - right to speedy trial - GITMO
8th - cruel and unusual punishment - AKA "enhanced interrogation"

The  good ole DOJ wanted AP to know their phones were being accessed????

Obama just sent a message to the corporate media; 'WE ARE WATCHING YOU???

And is it a coincidence that this very chilling message for the media is for them to be careful who they are talking to....regarding Benghazi-gate and IRS-gate?

Something smells kinda fishy dontcha think???? The LAME STREAM MEDIA got obama 'selected' and 're-selected'...they are loyal to their leader......they get chills down their legs when they hear obama speak......they already take their marching orders from GOV ALMIGHTY and have for years!!! The LAME STREAM MEDIA ain't gonna through obama/hillary/dem/liberal under the bus...cause if they did.....they'd be comin' up with egg all over their faces!!!!

The LAME STREAM MEDIA would go down in flames if the TRUTH were ever to come out about GOV ALMIGHTY!!

Nah....I ain't buyin it.....just a typical liberal re-direct!

still don't make sense! the LAME STREAM MEDIA would be more than happy to tell GOV ALMIGHTY who is 'leaking what'.
the LAME STREAM MEDIA is in the business of covering up and making GOV ALMIGHTY look good!

Perhaps GOV ALMIGHTY is just trying to piss off and/or poke at the 'real patriot's bee hive'....ya know the ones that respect and uphold the constitution......by threatening the constitution's FREE PRESS/FREEDOM OF SPEECH! GOV ALMIGHTY would like nothing better than a provoking revolution!!

and besides....GOV ALMIGHTY could have obtained these phone records without letting ANYONE know!!! Hell....they do it every single day!!

Nah....ain't buyin' it.....it's all smoke and mirrors!

What a surprise it must be for the corporate LAME STREAM MEDIA to find themselves on the same side of this issue as the independent media!

Ain't KARMA great.......if it's all true and not a dog and pony show!

CBS keeps trying to spin it as a national security issue. Isn't CBS News the one where the head honcho has a filial relationship to the White House?
Andrea Mitchell is unusually outraged over this. They are more upset (reporters) than they were when Obama wouldn't let them watch him play golf with Tiger Woods. Interesting.

The rats are starting to eat each other! Holder is throwing his number 2 under a bus to save his own a$$!!

Also.....there is this question of targeting the press to protect government secrets.

The reason the founding fathers provided for 'freedom of the press' was to allow the press to serve as a check on government abuse.
It was one of the many ways of keeping government subservient to the people.
The LAME STREAM MEDIA proclaims its traditional role as 'watchdog on the government....

This is clearly practiced by the independent media in this day and age.
Sooooooooooooooooooo the DOJ's targeting of the LSM for spying IS a direct violation of that first amendment!!!

IT DON'T TAKE A ROCKET SCIENTIST HERE FOLKS!!!

Congressman: Department of Justice Tapped Congressional Rooms as Well as Reporters’ Offices
Posted on May 16, 2013 by WashingtonsBlog

Has the Obama Department of Justice Violated the Separation of Powers?
California Congressman  Devin Nunes (R-CA) says that the Department Of Justice tapped phones in the rooms where Congress members speak informally and off the record, eat, sleep and socialize when they’re not on the floor of the House of Representatives or in their individual offices.

These rooms are known as “cloak rooms”, which are the spaces in which a lot of informal conversations occur … both between Congress members, and Congress members and reporters.
