Metzitzah B'peh Circumcision Ritual Inconsistent With Jewish Principles

In recent weeks, a controversial Jewish circumcision practice gained the national spotlight after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that between 2000 and 2011, at least 11 New York infants contracted genital herpes following ritual circumcision. Two of the babies died. This is distressing news to all who are concerned about the health and welfare of children.

The practice, called metzitzah b'peh, or oral suction, is used by a small number of Orthodox mohels (Jewish ritual circumcisers). Many assume this practice is a hallmark of strict religious observance -- for better or worse, the ultimate in adherence to Jewish tradition. What's rarely considered is the way in which metzitzah b'peh conflicts with basic Jewish principles.

Metzitzah b'peh is uncommon even among those Jews who opt for religious circumcision of their sons. Following the circumcision, the mohel takes a sip of wine and quickly removes the blood from the penis through the wine, using his mouth. He then spits the mixture out. Instituted in Talmudic times, long before the germ theory of disease was understood, metzitzah b'peh was once thought to disinfect the wound.

Now that we understand that metzitzah b'peh violates basic sanitary precautions, we must question it from the point of view of Jewish principles. It is a basic tenet of Judaism that human life is infinitely valuable, to be preserved at all costs, even if that means failing to fulfill some aspects of religious observance. Additionally, hazardous medical procedures are strictly forbidden in Judaism unless necessary for preservation of life.

Metzitzah b'peh is clearly hazardous and has no life-saving purpose. And herpes is only one of many diseases that we know can be transmitted orally.

Jewish law is constantly evolving. Our practices change as we learn. If we discover that a previously accepted Jewish tradition is dangerous -- or if we simply learn that there's a more compassionate way to act, one that is more consistent with Jewish principles than the previous interpretation -- it's incumbent on us to modify or discontinue the tradition.

There is ample precedent in Jewish law for change based on new insights. In Talmudic times, for example, the rabbis prohibited deaf Jews from participating fully in Jewish life. Today, deaf people are considered completely equal even among the most observant Jews. That is, Talmudic laws about the deaf are no longer honored even by the Orthodox. Our understanding increased, and our traditions changed.

The practice of Jewish circumcision has evolved over time. Most observant Jews have adopted a modified version of metzitzah, in which blood is removed from the circumcision site with a sterile pipette rather than through oral contact. Another example is the fact that over the last 25 years, many mohels who are also physicians have started administering local anesthesia. This is in response to current data establishing that infants feel pain acutely, as measured by heart rate, respiratory rate and cortisol levels. In both examples, circumcision practice has been modified to accommodate what we've learned.

The last few decades have brought revelations about the drawbacks of circumcision in general. Researchers are beginning to understand the physiological purpose and erogenous nature of foreskin tissue; many argue that the foreskin is a valuable and functioning part of normal male anatomy. Additionally, even without metzitzah b'peh, circumcision carries the risk of complications and death from sepsis, hemorrhage and other causes. All this has led a small number of Jews to question not only how circumcisions are performed, but the very act itself.

It may be tempting for some to defend metzitzah b'peh. Recently, an editorial appeared in EmaxHealth.com suggesting that anti-viral medicine should be considered for the infant as a prophylactic measure. This proposed solution, involving a risky and unnecessary intervention on a newborn, is no substitute for an honest reappraisal of metzitzah b'peh.

To suggest that we should never make changes based on new information is to imply that Judaism cannot withstand inquiry, that it cannot grow. Judaism has evolved and thrived over thousands of years. May it continue to do so.

Few Mayoral Candidates Stand Up to Chassidim on ‘Metzitzah B’peh’

Democratic candidate Erick Salgado called MBP “a practice that was commanded by God,” and practiced “since God told Abraham to do so.”

When it comes to the mayoral candidates’ stances on the controversial Jewish circumcision practice known as metzitzah b’peh, Rev. Erick Salgado and City Comptroller John Liu pledged to outright abolish the city’s regulation of the practice, The Forward reported.

“For thousands of years, this has been a practice that has been observed by people,” Liu said. “As with most procedures, some risk is inherent. But I would certainly defer to the rabbis on this, as opposed to thinking that, well, we know better after thousands of years of this practice.”

The metzitzah, translated as suction, is one of the steps involved in the circumcision rite, and is intended to renew blood flaw in the traumatized organ. But in recent years several babies became sick and at least two died, and it has been strongly suggested that the culprits in those cases were ritual circumcisers suffering from herpes simplex – and the NY City Dept. of Health is seeking to curb the practice, if not through legislation then through education.

In a meeting with an Orthodox Jewish crowd in Brooklyn that was posted online in March, Democratic candidate Bill Thompson was told by one of the attendees that any mayoral candidate who didn’t take a stand against regulation of MBP would be a candidate for whom people wouldn’t feel comfortable voting. In response, Thompson said, “The government needs to respect the religious beliefs of people.”

Thompson added that he had heard there was no discussion between members of the Orthodox Jewish community and the city, and that he would be “absolutely willing to sit down and talk” about balancing safety and religious practice.

Another Democratic candidate, Erick Salgado, in a speech to the Rabbinical Alliance of America, called MBP “a practice that was commanded by God,” one that had been practiced “since God told Abraham to do so.”

Republican mayoral hopeful Joe Lhota, was reportedly quoted by The Forward as a supporter of the regulation. Based on a video taken by Photo Journalist Shimon Gifter, the Forward concluded that Mr. Lhota’s assessment that the signed consent forms was “a reasonable approach” to tell parents what the risks are, was an expression of supporting the regulation.

Israeli Chief Rabbinate backs oral suction for brit milahs
BERLIN — Israel’s Chief Rabbinate issued a letter to Berlin’s Chabad rabbi upholding the importance of a controversial circumcision rite, metzitzah b’peh.

The Berlin rabbi, Yehudah Teichtal, is the subject of a complaint by anti-circumcision activists for allegedly allowing the rite to be performed last month on his newborn son. The complainants argue that metzitzah b’peh, in which blood is sucked orally from the circumcision wound, violates German laws regulating circumcision. Rabbi Teichtal has neither confirmed nor denied that metzitzah b’peh was performed at his son’s bris.

Rabbi Moshe Morsiano, chair of the division of circumcision for the Chief Rabbinate of Israel, said in his letter dated April 22 that there is no justification for avoiding metzitzah b’peh, “unless the mohel has a sore in his mouth, or some infectious disease.”

The Jewish legal opinion came from Rabbi Morsiano after the complaint was lodged against Rabbi Teichtal. Berlin’s state prosecutor is looking into the merits of the complaint.

Germany adopted a new law regulating ritual circumcision last December. The law requires that the procedure be done to the highest possible medical standards.

Metzitzah b’peh has come under fire from many Jewish groups, including modern Orthodox associations, due to the possible spread of infections that can be fatal to an infant. Opponents recommend the use of a glass pipette in place of direct oral suction.

Only a few non mainstream media sources have covered this in the past that I am aware of, and you can guess what they were called for questioning the practice

Anti-Sem...

Imagine if the HuffPo had written a headline that said 'acts of pedophilia inconsistent with Catholic principles'.

Yup, I'm not one to question religious practices but some things need to come to an end and this is one of them. This practice has been hidden from the public because they knew the backlash that would come from it, its no surprise the MSM never mentions this but wouldn't think twice about blasting all Catholics as if we condone the sick acts of a few in the church.

After looking a couple media sources did cover this but only after the story started to make the rounds on non MSM sources, but as said this has been going on for years without a peep.

Look at the way HuffPo covered it(first post).  They covered it as if it isn't condoned or widespread within the Jewish community.  Unlike the coverage of pedophilia in the Catholic Church, reported as if it was widespread and systemic.

The Federal Government can force Catholic institutions to pay for contraception, but they can't stop men from mutilating the genitals of baby boys and sucking the blood out of them.

what i find most strange is that since the implementation of socialized, taxpaid obamacare....that the government hasn't stepped in to ban this type of ritual since it is now being reported as a 'health issue'. This practice should be stopped before more babies get sick...this will only make our health care costs rise.

it really isn't a religious issue anymore.....it's a government issue.
