Now we know why two radical liberals from NYC wrote those big checks last year to buy influence in a certain local State Senate race.   The recipient now wants "campaign finance reform", "extended voting" and a bunch of other things so that the rest of New York State can have the same crooked political system as New York City.

As crooked as Schenectady county and city dems and their wild uncontrolled spending on downtown which ALL THE EVIDENCE has proven, and it's proven AGAIN THIS YEAR that it is causing a MASSIVE reduction in the tax base, right DV????

The only part of the Cuomo plan that I agree with is ending "cross endorsements."   Each party should endorse and nominate candidates FROM WITHIN THEIR OWN PARTY or not run any candidates at all.  That way every party -- major or minor would have to find viable candidates and stand or fall on their party platforms and record of accomplishments (or lack of accomplishments).  

More importantly, we need to be assured that ONLY those people who are legally eligible to vote can vote AND can only vote ONCE.  Require voters to show an I.D. when they sign the book before voting -- and that is not a difficulty since showing an I.D, is required for a lot of other interactions with government agencies .. even the County Library has asked for an I.D. when people renew their library cards.

Hanson just switched from rep to dem JUST to get the endorsement and GOD only knows what else.

That is actually a separate issue.  

Right now - a person can be enrolled in one party and be endorsed by his/her own party and 3 or 4 other parties.   So the first step is to actually stop CROSS PARTY ENDORSEMENTS altogether.  That way a person could only run on one party line -- period.

As for a person changing enrollment just to get an endorsement, I agree it is problematic but I am not sure that it would be constitutional to prohibit a person from changing parties or making some kind of time restriction between the switch and receiving the endorsement and nomination.

I won't comment about any specific endorsed candidates in the Town of Rotterdam other than to say that  a) I had nothing to do with the endorsement process of any political party and b) it is very likely that I as private citizen won't be supporting or endorsing or voting for ANY of the so far named or suggested candidates for town-wide office.

Ronald Reagan changed political parties.  Abraham Lincoln changed political parties.  Winston Churchill changed political parties.  So while I am NOT saying that I am planning to vote for people who changed their parties to get a political endorsement, I don't think that one can say absolutely that one would NEVER vote for a person who changed political parties.

Also -- the point that I was making is that it IS possible (constitutionally) to end cross party endorsements .. but it would NOT be possible (constitutionally) to ban people from changing parties or ban them from changing parties and then being nominated by the new party.    IF YOU WANT REAL ELECTION REFORM< IT DOESN'T MAKE SENSE TO WASTE TIME PUSHING SOMETHING THAT IS MOST LIKELY UNCONSTITUTIONAL.

I don't want my tax dollars going to fund the campaigns of candidates that I don't support.

Tkaczyk is pushing these proposals because she is beholden to the special interests in New York City who got her elected to the State Senate.   They want the same "reforms" that were put in place in New York City -- the same "reforms" which have lined the pockets of many downstate politicians and special interests -- the same "reforms" that have given us one of the most corrupt state legislatures in the country.

The first step to real reform is to boot out ALL the incumbent state legislators of BOTH parties.
