Cops: Four killed Schenectady blaze
Updated 9:19 am, Thursday, May 2, 2013

SCHENECTADY - Four of the five people were pulled from a burning home on Hulett Street died early Thursday morning, police Lt. Mark McCracken said.

The victims are one adult and three children. A fourth child pulled from the building remains hospitalized at the Westchester Medical Center burn unit, he said.

The victims suffered severe burns in the 4:30 a.m. blaze at 438 Hulett St. and firefighters resuscitated three of the victims at the scene.

The victims were all hospitalized.

It was one of two fires in the city overnight. Schenectady Police Lt. Mark McCracken said firefighters also responded to a fire on 17 South Swan St. The severity of that blaze and whether anyone was injured was not immediately clear.

Up to 20 people are receiving help from the Red Cross in the aftermath of the fires, the agency said.

Wonder if the taxpayers are paying to demolish it because the dems are so focused on their precious big money cronies downtown that they don't have the time to monitor every absentee owner to make sure they have insurance --remember Popolizio---gee, did the city expend city resources to take him to court to get the money back?   Hell NO, the dems are too focused on their precious downtown, SCREW THE NEIGHBORHOODS is the slogan of the city dems

483 Hulett Street is an Autobody shop.  Looks like the Times Union got it right with 438 Hulett Street.

I heard all hell breaking loose last night, too early for the Hulett Street fire, must've been the Swan Street one. I thought I heard a helicopter last night as well, but that was before there were any sirens.
Doesn't it seem like fires, fatal fires, and fires with total loss to the property are increasing rapidly? I wonder if there are statistics available on that?
Rundown, overcrowded tenement slums are kindling.

Sad loss of life.

Man arraigned in deadly Schenectady fire
By Paul Nelson
Updated 11:49 am, Friday, May 3, 2013

Schenectady

A Saratoga Springs man was arraigned Friday on a charge of felony arson for starting the fire that killed a man and his three children Thursday in Hamilton Hill.

Robert Butler, 27, appeared before City Court Judge Matthew Sypniewski during the brief proceeding. At one point, Butler, who was represented by the public defender's office, turned around and stared into the crowded gallery as the judge addressed him.

Butler's arraignment came hours after police charged him with the crime.

David Terry, a 32-year-old stay-at-home father, Layah Terry, 3; Michael Terry, 2; and Donavan Duell, 11 months, all died in the fast-moving pre-dawn fire Thursday.

Terry's 5-year-old daughter, Safyre, was listed in critical condition with severe burns Thursday at Westchester Medical Center, police said.

Court papers indicate Butler started the fire "using a form of liquid accelerant" in the front staircase leading to the second-floor apartment of 438 Hulett St. Two adults on the second floor and nine tenants on the first floor escaped.

He was sent back to the county jail without bail pending a court appearance at 10 a.m. Tuesday.

City police spokesman Lt. Mark McCracken said Friday that Butler is known to the residents of the building.

Outside court, Jeff Woodbeck, the children's maternal grandfather, reacted to what he felt was Butler's seemingly nonchalant attitude in court.

"It made me angry, he should have at least shown he had some kind of remorse, but he didn't," said Woodbeck, 45."If he's guilty, he should be locked up for the rest of his life for what he did to my grandkids."

Woodbeck's daughter, Jennica Duell, is the mother of the four children. Woodbeck said he is estranged from Duell.

McCracken said police are awaiting the results of the autopsies before deciding on what other criminal charges Butler will face.

Elizabeth Dolder, Terry's older sister, said Friday morning that until recently Butler lived in the Hulett Street apartment. She said Terry kicked Butler out.

Terry's best friend, William Rankin, confirmed that account.

"He was very violent toward Jennica, and David did not tolerate that," Rankin said. "He didn't want violence around the kids." She was interviewed by city police detectives and released, authorities said.

Rankin is organizing a gathering and birthday observance in his friend's memory at 9 p.m. Friday outside 438 Hulett St. David Terry would have turned 33 years old Friday.

A team of county and federal fire investigators remained at the scene Friday sifting through debris for clues that may help determine the cause and origin of the fire. Once they're done, the structure will be demolished.

Jennica Duell now contends she was sound asleep in Saratoga Springs, coming down from an acid trip, when her boyfriend doused a stairwell with gasoline and ignited a horrific inferno.

Killed in the blaze at the Hulett Street home were her three young children and their father. Her daughter, Sa'fyre, was badly burned.

As a federal investigation into the tragedy proceeds, Duell, who earlier testified before a grand jury that she was at the arson scene, has remained largely out of sight while staying with her mother in Schenectady and a friend in Montgomery County.

Facing a possible death penalty in the case, Robert Butler sits in jail without bail, charged under federal law with arson. Duell said she has since split up with Butler.
Last week the 25-year-old mother broke her silence in a series of interviews with the Times Union.
