A couple more interesting tidbits. The first one made me laugh, and I thought maybe this should be implemented.

And again these are

No wonder Schenectady didn't want us  - still no excuse for staying the course  - of an inept police force

i would gladly have more civil safety officers on the beat if there was no overtime inclusion in the retirement calculation for the whole whole force

Bear in mind that $2 dollars in 1870 was worth a lot more than $2 today -- basically the equivalent of MORE than two days wages back then.  While, you may think it was great that the assessor was "only" being paid $2 per actual day worked -- but that means that the assessor was actually being paid MORE THAN TWICE the daily wage for 1 days work.  So, you might want to think it over a bit -- was it actually better way back than for tax payers.

On the piece regarding the body discovered, I notice that someone immediately responds with a post attacking the town police.  The Rotterdam Town Police Department wasn't around in 1870 nor would it be for another 70 or so years.  The fact is that the Rotterdam Town Police Department has a very good record when it comes to solving crimes and most of the common-sense, hard-working, rational thinking people in town are pretty happy to be served and protected by such a fine law enforcement agency.

I personally think the PD is over-staffed. Consider that in 1975 with a population of over 35,000 the force consisted of 32 men. The 2010 census was 29,094 and the department now consists of I think 62 people. Seems to me with today's technology and a decreasing population we need to employ fewer people. The crime figures also don't show the need for such a large force.

Re: the assessor, I think the $2 is about right.

Personally, I support consolidating all of the law enforcement agencies in Schenectady County -- and actually all of the school districts and municipal governments as well.   1 City-County of Schenectady with 1 Schenectady County Public School District --- would really make the most sense and save the most money for tax payers.

That's pretty much a pipe dream. Too many moving parts for it to actually ever happen.

It was announced today that beginning January 1, 2014 the name of Schenectady County
will be changed officially to Galesi County.

Yep, leave to the unemployed, NON-taxpaying dem cheerleader to cheer for raising taxes more on us--adults--who work, have our loving spouses, try to raise our children and maintain our homes.   Now he wants our taxes raised because it WILL cost more when we are FORCED to pay for the buses all over the place.  FORCING us to pay for our burb children to be bused into DV's precious MP neighborhood and perhaps get shot, with all those lockdowns at the city schools, that neighborhood that he fled and won't go near (except his church), FORCE people to put up with the gang kids of the city to be bussed out to our quiet neighborhoods so that after dropped off on the bus they can sneak away and then our taxes will go up with all the extra cost for extra police attention in the burbs for all the problems we don't have now!

You seem to love the city so very much, WHY do you REFUSE to live IN the city?????????    Can you answer that?  Of course not, he will only spew nonsense babble but will NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER explain WHY he REFUSES to live IN the city!

But leave it to a guy who will NEVER know the joys of parenting to try take away choices form parents on where their children go to school!

Optimists close their eyes and pretend problems are non existent.
Better to have open eyes, see the truths, acknowledge the negatives, and
speak up for the people rather than the politicos and their rich cronies.

At some point consolidation is coming.  The state isn't going to increase aid to municipalities and the municipalities can't continue on the present course.  Consolidation WILL HAPPEN .. the only question now is whether it will happen willingly (that is be proposed from some local political leaders who actually have a backbone and a brain) or gets instituted from above by the state.

Consolidation of municipalities, school districts and other taxing entities will happen within the next 5 to 10 years.  Already many of these units of government are complaining about the difficulties of living within the "tax cap" and being able to continue to provide the same level of services.

I plan to still be around (living) in 5 to 10 years -- actually a whole lot longer than that.  I am hoping to be around for at least another 40 or 50 years.  That way, I 'll get to see Jeb Bush, George P. Bush and maybe even George and Laura's granddaughter become President of the United States.
