. There have been murders, kidnappings, strong arm robberies, drug rings, gambling rings etc. for as long as I can remember here. And I can remember back to 1953 when my family moved here. The still unsolved Cedarlawn Ave. murder. The murder on Helderberg Ave. where the bodies were buried in the backyard. The kidnapping of a local grocer etc., crime has always been here. Maybe not to the degree that it is in some other places, but it's been here. Can things be better? Of course they can. Will we ever go back to 1953? Nope. Is the current or past police and town leaders to blame? I have no idea nor will I speculate or hypothesize. I just didn't think this thread was the place for it. what is the cause, how can this be fixed? - or is this too much though for us common folk to handle - everyday we are looking more and more like Schenectady of the late 80 and 90's
assessment season is around the corner - what will the grievences show
police retirement is driving the police budget
we have issues with water
reluctance to invest in our infrastructure other than pave our roads
lack of property maintenance
a comp plan that makes little sense and no one follows
more and more multifamily housing conversions
seems if it doesnt squeak it is not addressed and even then we slap it with crisco and hope the issue goes away
about the only thing we invest in is more appointed town staff and their problems

These are all symptoms of tax death.
Properties will continue to lack maintenance and improvements.
Property values are way down and there is no sign of that trend stopping.
Every year they tax more, driving down home values.
The concept of spending less just isn't even discussed.
Who wants to invest more money into sinking properties?
the scum from schenectady is now present in ROTTENdam....as with most surrounding towns. ROTTENdam government doesn't have the balls to buck the city/county dems. They lick their boots at the taxpayer's expense. they don't know nor understand the words 'cut spending'. patronage jobs are plentiful...at the taxpayer's expense. add to the fact that society is in decline as well as the economy....it's a sure recipe for FAILURE!!

Good post. And you hit one of the nails right on the head. No direction. All of our "leaders" have no vision. They're quite happy with the status quo, for it keeps them in a position of power. Part of the problem is there doesn't seem to be any support in town for "new blood" and new ideas. And to be honest with you for the 60 years I've been a resident here , this has always been a heavily Democratic town. Oh sure the Republicans have on occasion had some representation, but it never lasts. I think they mainly get elected because people get convinced that somehow a change is going to make a difference. Sadly when they realize it's "same ol' same ol' they pretty much lose interest and become apathetic.
The Democrats laugh like hell when this happens. I think they have a secret motto, "Rotterdam Democrats ya can't beat us, so ya might as well join us. So many have already." As long as no one steps up to the plate and makes a real attempt to try and change things, nothing will change.
I agree somewhat with Bumblethru's assessment also. Societal change certainly is playing a role. Where I disagree with him though is the leaving part. I'm willing to fight to the end. I'm not going to be driven out of the place I have lived nearly my entire life by a bunch of inept bungling morons.

As the implosion in Mt P continues to expand it will hurt town homeowners closest to the City. Of course things are worse than the sixties when you didn't need to lock doors and armed response. This is not about Cuomo. It is about a decision to switch from an industrial city to a welfare/nonprofit city. It started way before he was elected. Maybe another governmental gin mill will turn Downtown around? lol.
