Just a heads up there is a police check point (revenue maker) on Crane St right over the bridge when heading towards Altamont Ave, right where the old flea market used to be. Don't give them a reason to stop you find another way to go if heading that way.

Is it legal for a cop to stop you for 'no reason at all' except to 'just check'?

They are supposed to have probable cause to be able to stop you, example you flew past a red light and they seen you do it. However when money is what they are after they will do whatever they want. All to often they say it is in the name of safety and the idiot public buys it .

I just got my (mandatory 2 year) registration reminder in the mail.

$60 + $20 Use tax.

Yeah thank you NYS - use tax on stuff you buy from them, and use tax also added in the income tax forms.

I cannot wait to leave this state someday.

The great state of NY - where population is going down enough to lose two US house representatives, but state budget keeps going up.

I cannot wait to take my taxes and fees with me to another state that doesn't control and tax every aspect of life.

These checks are legal and have been authorized by our court system.  No one likes getting stopped or questioned by the police but don't try to spin this thread into some kind of noble public service.

And, if you posters are going to post legal opinions - you really need to educate yourselves.

Educate themselves???  Some on this board consider it a 'badge of honor' to display their distain for
any kind of education.

Every drunk driver that's taken off the road is a benefit to everyone on the road (or on the sidewalk).

Quoted Text
Fewer alcohol-related crashes occur when sobriety checkpoints are implemented,
according to a report published in the December 2002 issue of Traffic Injury Prevention.
This conclusion is based on a systematic review of research on sobriety checkpoints.
The review was conducted by a team of experts led by CDC scientists, under the oversight
of the Task Force on Community Preventive Services–a 15-member, non-federal group of
leaders in various health-related fields.
The review combined the results of 23 scientifically–sound studies from around the world.
Results indicated that sobriety checkpoints consistently reduced alcohol–related crashes,
typically by about 20%.
The results were similar regardless of how the checkpoints were
conducted, and results were similar for short–term “blitzes” or when checkpoints were used
continuously for several years. This suggests that the effectiveness of checkpoints does no
t diminish over time.

I do not have a major problem with the police inspecting cars to see that they are registered and have their inspection up to date.

True I believe it is more of a revenue generation plan - but I don't even have an issue with the concept of vehicle registration and a fee associated with it.

I do however have an issue of that rate going up more than inflation - and the added "use tax" on top of it.  A tax essentially on a tax.  And then as I said - in the NYS income taxes, boom - another use tax, that isn't based on any factual data.  Purely based on income, so it really is just an added income tax that they "hide" as not an "income tax".

NYS is the least free state, and it is crumbling slowly with the increasing taxes / fees, increasing cost of living, decreasing tax base - and an aging public infrastructure.

Ok, done venting

Look at that, box provided a "study" that justifies infringing on the 4th amendment.  Why am I not surprised?  It's consistent with his gun control policy of violating everybody's rights to prevent a few violators.  Man Americans are stupid.

If you see a checkpoint, do a u-turn and go the other way.  Unless you enjoy being randomly harassed.

Registration stickers as well as inspection stickers are color coded reflecting the 'year'....that was done to make it easier to 'spot' by a cop....no need to 'stop' the vehicle.....yes?

Sure because it was sold on the bs excuse of safety when you and me know what the real reason is. And I will post whenever I can and warn people of the scumbag tactics being used by law enforcement to f*** the taxpayers even more. If I stopped one person here today from getting a ticket I will be happy sorry if you don't like it.

What are the demographics of the Crane Street neighborhoods?  Targeting a certain demographic?

They are ready for that and they usually have a car ready to go after anyone they see trying to avoid the revenue maker, this is why it is important for people to find the locations of these and spread the word so others can avoid them completely.

Maybe they will turn MP into some sort of ghetto and fence it off, finally.

They still need probable cause to stop you.  Avoiding a checkpoint isn't probable cause.  You have to violate a traffic law.

Henry - once again you prove you don't know what you're talking about.  These are not big revenue generators.

You don't want to give the government your money - just get your car registered, inspected - seems fairly simple.
