Liberty is the value of individuals to have control over their own actions.NYPD Freaks Out About Statue Of Liberty Security, Feds Have To Calm Cops Down Courtesy NYC Aviation's flickr Poor, poor Lady Liberty: it's been taking her FOREVER to get back on her feet post-Hurricane Sandy, and now she's finding herself in the middle of a fierce battle between the NYPD and the National Park Service over security screenings. The Park Service has decided to move the security screening area for visitors to the Statue from Battery Park to Ellis Island once the tourist attraction reopens on July 4th. Security sweeps have been conducted in Battery Park since 9/11, but the city's Parks Department has reportedly been asking the feds to move the tent it set up for the screenings out of the area. The NYPD, however, isn't too happy about putting thousands of tourists on a ferry to Ellis Island before going through security. "The Park Service's decision to reopen the Statue of Liberty without screening in Manhattan was made against the NYPD's recommendation and leaves unresolved the vulnerability to attack on ferry passengers en route to both Liberty and Ellis Islands," Deputy Commissioner Paul Browne said in a statement yesterday. Now, the Park Service says they'll work with the NYPD to come up with a screening plan that'll make everybody happy. "We share a mutual interest in protecting both the monument and the visitors," Park Service spokesman Jeffrey Olson and Browne said in a joint statement yesterday. Why can't we all just get along? |
