Water break: Boil water in Rotterdam
Updated 7:13 pm, Friday, March 29, 2013

ROTTERDAM – A portion of Curry Road is closed after a water main break at the intersection of Hollywood Avenue, according to police.

Curry Road is closed until further notice from Helderberg Avenue to Parklawn Avenue.

Schenectady County Public Health Services has also advised Rotterdam residents who have lost water pressure due to the break to boil their water for one-to-three minutes as a precaution once water service is restored.

County Health Officials are working to determine whether any additional action will be required.

ROTTERDAM
Water main break floods Curry Road
House, lawns damaged; crews work into night

BY JUSTIN MASON Gazette Reporter
Reach Gazette reporter Justin Mason at 395-3113 or jmason@dailygazette.net.

At least one home was damaged and numerous properties lost water service after a large transmission line ruptured late Friday afternoon.
Town officials shut down a section Curry Road between Helderberg Avenue and Cedarlawn Avenue in the effort to fix the rupture, which sent water cascading down the major thoroughfare. Pools of water — some more than 6 feet deep — formed around where the 20-inch line broke just before the evening commute.
“We’re still having difficulty shutting the off the water,” Highway Superintendent James Longo said from the scene late Friday.
Longo wasn’t sure what caused the main to break, but said it’s among a long list of aging infrastructure in the town. He estimated the main, which feeds Water District 5, was likely put in decades ago.
About three homes sustained flooding from the broken main. Longo said the torrent buckled a cellar wall of one home, leaving its basement filled with water.
The break also caused parts of the sidewalk on Curry Road to buckle and washed out the lawn of one business. Longo said water service was also turned off for a number of businesses and residences between the railroad bridge and Helderberg Avenue, including Mallozzi’s banquet hall.
At the peak of the break, an estimated 120,000 gallons of water per hour were spilling down the street. Longo said the power of the transmission line led to some pretty quick fl ooding.
“When these things go pop, they come out of the ground like a geyser,” he said.
Town officials were unsure when Curry Road will be reopened. Longo said his crews had almost gotten the rupture isolated late Friday and anticipated the problem could be resolved by this morning.
“We’re going to work through the night,” he said.

AGAIN  ???????????

So how many have there been lately, past six months, year?

Oh yeah, the infrastsructure is old, it has it's problems, it's too be expected, and it costs money to fix.

Oh, funny, the dems around here have money to spend on tax exemptions for their rich cronies, they can spend money for fancy UNNECESSARY lighting, they can spend money on gold ceilings, they can spend money on gin mills, but can't spend money on the NECESSITIES, the ESSENTIAL VITAL SERVICES to the TAXPAYERS (those of us who ARE INDEPENDENT ADULTS, homeowners and renters (who pay tax via rent)) who also pay the salaries of these morons.  And our home values go down.  Just look over on the town streets off Altamont Ave, and going over toward Hamburg and the otherside of it too, homes going for $130,000, $120,000, even down to $100,000, same as people paid 10 years ago!

And the damage these watermain breaks cause, or the flooding in some areas during rain because of the aging infrastructure, how much is that costing the homeowners?   Is the town paying to clean up homes, repair foundations?   Is homeowners insurance covering these losses, not sure if people in that area around town hall would purchase flood insurance, not sure if that's the same definition of flood, most most homeowners policies will not cover damages from water that comes from the ground.  Put in a claim, your premium goes up.

But the dem leaders, what do they care?   They need money, they can run to Galesi because they are exempting Galesi from paying taxes!!!

Rotterdam is looking like a sh!thole. Took a friend home last week...had to go over the bridge on mariaville rd by that ice cream place and the multi-million dollar fire house.....it feels like it's crooked....uneven....or whatever....the roads are a mess!

the powers to be in ROTTENdam better bite the bullet now.....cut all spending....cancel all non essential programs and invest in the infrastructure NOW!!!

this water main break....with all of the personal damage....will cost the town aka taxpayers a BUNDLE!!

Is Price Chopper open?   Are they boiling all the water they are using?

However, I ran into a friend at Stewart's, he said that the Rott PD said there is no boil water advisory.
