Police investigate death of an 8 year old

Police in Schenectady are looking into what caused the death of an 8 year old this morning. They are not releasing the childs' identity, but say he was found by family just after 10:00 Saturday morning.

The child was treated on scene by members of the Schenectady fire department and taken to Ellis Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police are treating the residence as a crime scene until they can determine what caused his death. An autopsy is scheduled for Sunday. The Youth Aid Bureau and Evidence Collection Unit are also investigating.

The autopsy has been completed on the death of the 8 year old male found unresponsive at 23 Mynderse Ave and the cause of death has been ruled a homicide.  The victim has been identified as NELLIGAN, Sha’hiim, of 23 Mynderse Ave.  
The Schenectady Police Department has made an arrest in connection with this homicide.  Detectives from the Youth Aid Bureau have arrested NELLIGAN, Gloria, age 43, of 23 Mynderse Ave, and charged her with: One count of Manslaughter in the 1st Degree, a Class B felony.

NELLIGAN, Gloria is the grandmother and legal guardian of the victim.

The residence is still being held as a crime scene.  The incident is still under investigation by members of the Youth Aid Bureau and the Evidence Collection Unit. The Schenectady Police Department would like to formally recognize and thank Det. J. Hotaling, the lead detective, as well as members of the Child Protective Services for their involvement in this case.

That is the argument that Gloria Nelligan, a single parent rearing three children enrolled at New Covenant, hopes will carry the day.

Ms. Nelligan praised the school for bringing her fifth-grade daughter, once shy and now a cheerleader, out of her shell, and for keeping her grandson, who takes medications for multiple disorders, from being shunted into special education. “I told Mr. Baptiste, ‘Wherever you go, whether right here on the corner or a bleacher, I will send you my children,’ ” she said. “We don’t need the building to call it a school.”

SCHENECTADY — Police have charged the grandmother of an 8-year-old city boy in connection with his death, which was ruled a homicide Sunday after an autopsy.

Grandmother was arraigned they are saying the little boy died after a prolonged beating   If that is true put the "grandmother" in with the inmates and let her get a worse "whooping" than she gave her "grandson"

And sadly, there are so many of these scumbags hurting children every single day!! This little elementary school peanut deserved so much better and for their life to end by the hand of a monster is beyond inhuman.

My heart is simply so sadden...it's injust and quite pathetic knowing that the City has hundreds of non-profits lining every street for children and family services.

In the TU story she says she's on assistance for mental and physical disabilities. Last night someone claiming to be herrelative stated on one of the news stations Facebook stories that this woman ran a daycare. Any idea if she was indeeded running a daycare out of home...and if so any word on her behavior towards those children?
