I dont get this, how do you know when trash day is. I thought Christmas would change like Schenectady but then some people have cans out and others don't I'm trying to take care of my parents house. Can you in the town get this straightened around and maybe the town can put out a schedule for each neighborhood Schenectady has so we would know.  Can you post the schedule here. Gerri;  Rotterdam has private contractor trash pickup, at the selection and payment by the homeowner.  Many different trash companies, and they all have different policies regarding collection on and around holidays.  You need to find out who the contractor is, and call them for their schedule.  The Town has nothing to do with trash collection . . . . Thank you for responding, I'm sorry I didn't say thank you sooner. It is really different so I called my parents' company I should have known on the cans but they said that automated phone calls were made but that's too bad because my parents phone is off until they come back up here so no phone call. That's why I think what we have in Schenectady is better because we have the calendars and yes we can think for ourselves but I guess there is so much we can be preoccupied with that it can be a thing we try to think what day we had pick up last week when things change. And I guess because the days change with what the city observes as holidays are not holidays for some places where people work and are for others so if we don't have the holiday we don't think of changes to the pick up day so the city came up with this wonderful idea for the calendar thing, I have it hanging convenient and never put it out on the wrong day. I can't imagine being limited to one trash can I mean besides the recycling but I do wish people here in Schenectady would more put trash in the can instead of just the bags. I am sorry if I'm writing too much. And thank you for filling me in, my parents have too much on their plate.

Some waste collection services have a website that has their holiday schedule posted on line to allow you to check for collection dates.

We need to make it a government service because only the government "can provide a calendar" for people. Never mind that it costs triple. People like her is why we are screwed in this area.

My thoughts while reading this thread lead me to several thoughts: If you cannot figure out something as simple as trash collection, you have more problems than not knowing when your rubbish can will be emptied. Make a phone call to the number on the side of the can, that's exactly what I did and was provided with concise info in about 45 seconds.

Secondly, do you seriously think the city of Schenectady could provide better service than a private company? Even if it is just trash pickup? County Waste has done a phenomenal job for a trash company in my experience. What do you think the residents of the city really pay for waste collection?

The problem with County Waste is that the days don't change enough. In the City there is a faux holiday such as MLK day, which come around every 5 weeks or so thereby pushing the collection day back a day each time that happens. I would surmise that the City collections days change about 15 times a year cycling through the weekdays. The County Waste pickup only changes if the pickup day is on Thanksgiving or Christmas and maybe July4. I would say it stays on the same day for most people with only 2 or 3 changes tops. Gerri likes the certitude of the "government" because it makes her feel "safer."

Federal or global trash pickup is the only solution.  Trash shouldn't be picked up on Yom Kippur or during Ramadam.

They only have three guys due to the draconian and terrible budget cuts and if they fail to get all your trash then there must be a republican you should blame that was once in office over 2 decades ago that "slashed" the workers "needed" to get the job done right and on time.

Actually if they don't get the fourth guy back soon then the children may suffer and families may be in jeopardy.
