ROTTERDAM Mohonasen gets $374K grant to improve teaching BY MICHAEL GOOT Gazette Reporter Reach Gazette reporter Michael Goot at 395-3105 or mgoot@dailygazette.net.
The Mohonasen Central School District was among 17 school districts statewide that were awarded a state grant to improve teaching, the New York State Education Department announced. The district will receive $374,000 as part of the Strengthening Teacher and Leader Effectiveness program. The Education Department anticipates awarding $58.6 million during the next two years. To qualify for the grant, districts had to have at least 25 percent of students from low-income families and have developed a “comprehensive approach to recruitment, development, support, retention and equitable distribution of effective teachers and school leaders.” Districts also were required to have an approved teacher and principal evaluation plan. Mohonasen officials say the grant will be used to help strengthen literacy, math, science and technology instruction in grades three through eight to increase scores on the state tests, especially among special education and economically disadvantaged students. “We are focused on making sure we help all students build a strong foundation in the areas of literacy, math and science because these are lifelong skills,” Mohonasen Superintendent Kathleen Spring said in a news release. “By offering teachers and school leaders more support and strengthening their skills, we will be working to improve student achievement.” During the next two years, the district will hire consultants to provide training and support to math, science and special education teachers; offer stipends to teachers and school leaders who return to school to gain either additional teaching certifi cation or course experience in areas that will strengthen their expertise; and create coaching, mentoring and support positions to assist teachers in grades three through eight. This is the second grant the district has received in the last couple months. In August, it was awarded a $1,8 million, three-year grant to boost vocational programs. ..................................>>>>.........................>>>>.....................http://www.dailygazette.net/De.....r01200&AppName=1

As educated teachers that the taxpayer pays a sh!tload for......ya'd think they already would know how to teach effectively.....

I visited the school in 2004. I visited again last august. Much was done in those 9 years alone. The school is far from barbaric. They have a lot of modern amenities. I was especially impressed with a lecture hall that can join lectures and other educational events from around the country. I recognized much of the school. There was also much added or improved since my time (the 80s). Good for the district they received this grant. |

yup they do, not sayin they dont, but they are on a sinking ship. they should take their ship back from the state and fed and bring it right here where it belongs. the power of the local, people over their own offspring, not crazy people (who claim to be " our benefactors") who do not live here but want to run the world. the "man Dates" ,put on us by said "benefactors", is what drives up the cost.. close to 10 grand a year to educate one offspring and that is only for offspring that are in top condition, by the time they get done labeling all the defectives, drugging them and sending in all the extra experts to sort it all out its outa control, and If we do not take it back we deserve to pay through the nose and lick the hand that feeds us.
they been trying to fix this thing for how many years now?? come on these are educated people PHDs and everything if they have not fixed it by now then maybe its time to look at other options? |

it is not a hotel - they don't need amenities - pools, video conference, lit football/baseball fields, tracks they need to teach k-8 students to read - understand write - spell math - +-*/ reason and respect of others an ipad, laptop, projector, 80" monitor, cell phone, calculator - all the tech sh!t in the world or $$$$$$$$ wont fix this issue everyone is looking for the golden ticket or short cut to avoid acquiring basic skills students should have to earn their amenities by showing basic knowledge and skills at the end of 8th grade |

I'm normally for consolidation but in this case due to the size of the town geographically it would make some kids trips to school extremely long. It's just not that practical in this case. |
