The story says Mohonasen, but he could be going between school districts very easily in this town. That's why I'm not posting Mohonasen in the title. http://www.spotlightnews.com/news/2012/sep/20/mohon-warns-suspicious-man/

Mohon warns of suspicious man .Spotlight Staff As of Thursday, September 20, 2012 -3:43 p.m. .Sign in to favorite this Discuss Comment, Blog about Share this Email, Facebook, Twitter .#ROTTERDAM — Mohonasen Central School District officials on Wednesday, Sept. 19, said they received a report a man may be approaching children at or around bus stops and asking for directions. The man has asked children to meet him at another location so he can give them free bicycles, officials said.
#The man was described as tall with unwashed shoulder length grey hair, wearing eyeglasses, smoking and appearing unshaven. He has been seen driving an older silver pickup truck in good condition.
#Police and district officials were contacted about the situation and the district’s Transportation Department has alerted bus drivers. The district sent a letter home to parents on Wednesday.
#“We encourage you to speak to your children this evening about the importance of not talking to strangers,” district officials said. “We also encourage you to work within the community to provide adult supervision at your child’s bus stop to monitor their safety.”
#The district provided an update on Thursday, Sept. 20, and said it received several calls regarding the letter. Also, it said “several rumors” about the man have been circulating. It assured parents police are investigating the reports.
#The district urged parents noticing anything out of the ordinary, or children mentioning such incident, to contact the Rotterdam Police Department at 355-7331
As a parent of children in Schalmont, this concerns me greatly. |

New details on the case out of Rotterdam where three elementary age kids say they were approached at the school bus stop by a man in a truck. Police say that suspect was located and questioned, but is not facing any charges.
The man had allegedly approached the kids on two occasions, once telling them about free bicycles and another time asking where the Price Chopper was.
Authorities say he lives in the neighborhood and has no criminal record. We're told police believe the man was just being friendly and the whole thing was a misunderstanding. |

Rpforpres, what is the source of this? Print or television? I fear I must get on my soapbox. I understand the need for caution as it relates to children and strangers. The children must be protected for they are the future, and there are far too many evil persons in this world who would cause harm to them. And yet the story of a stranger talking to children at a bus stop has evoked here an almost hysterical reaction. What if some of the posters here had formed a "posse", waited in the bushes for the stranger to appear and upon seeing him, exacted a vigilante vengeance upon him causing serious injury or dare I say even his demise, only to find he was merely "asking for directions to Price Chopper". Would we say then, that it was better to "shoot first and ask questions later?" I have read far too many stories recently of children, with their vivid child imaginations, reporting instances of being approached by strangers, only to find out later that the story was in fact fabricated or a misunderstanding as the most recent incident turned out to be. I for one have adopted an attitude of ignoring children altogether. I avoid eye contact and any conversation with the children in my neighborhood. Better safe than having to endure the embarrassment of false accusation and police interrogation. Even the threat of violence from a child's parent is possible. I remember many years ago the hysteria in an incident revolving around a Day Care center in California. People were prosecuted and went to prison over false accusations. Have we become so hardened and paranoid that any innocent interaction with a child must be construed as something to be wary of? I have no answers myself I must confess, but I do believe we have become a paranoid society in the name of child safety. A very sad situation indeed. Stepping down from my soapbox. |

Bumblethru, I am sure your's is not an isolated incident. Sadly my belief is this is a result of poor parenting. |

I would wager that the bat wielding youth's parents would exclaim in his defense, "He's really a good kid, just misunderstood." Children can be very cruel. I'm not sure where to place the blame. |

Don't understand that a sexual predator praying on children is the fault of parents......what planet do you come from???
some of these statements sound like someone who is bitter and against mankind.....and no compassion or understanding the young mind who feels threatened.
chill out.....make an apology to those of us who think there are predators that feed off the innocence of children...and misunderstanding is the excuse they
all use...in today's world......being aware of "bad" people is the first order of business that should be taught to children....whether or not there was a
misunderstanding....children perceive threats in many ways.....and seriously?......at young ages they tend not to lie .....
All reports of this kind have to be taken seriously.....especially in the light of "free bicycles"...etc.,....

I don't know who you're talking to, but if you're looking for an apology, call Obama, you won't get it from me. PS: If you start drinking AFTER 9am, it won't be so apparent to everyone in your blog posts. Try starting right at the stroke of noon - people will expect you to babble away after that, but not at 9am. |
