Schenectady Police Lt. Eric Clifford said while street names are common, so too are people who shorten or truncate their names. For example, William may become "Will" or Paul turns into "P." The Schenectady cop said that in some instances multiple people will assume the same nickname. "We often know street names before we know government names," he said, adding that the department maintains an "active database" of street names along with government names.
