Waterski school owner accused of harassing canoeistSCOTIA — The owner of a water-skiing school was arrested Friday after police said he used his boat to try to force a woman in a canoe away from a stretch of the Mohawk River. Village police said Joseph P. Serth, 48, of Pattersonville, owner of the Camp Mohawk Valley Ski School, intentionally flooded the woman's canoe at 5 p.m. on July 31 by driving his boat close to her canoe and creating a large wake. Serth then turned his boat and quickly drove toward the 51-year-old woman before making a sharp turn next to her canoe, splashing water onto her and the canoe, police said. The woman told police that Serth had previously told her that she doesn't belong on the river when he's on it. Serth was charged with second-degree reckless endangerment, first-degree harassment, reckless operation of a vessel and reckless operation/speed on the canal system. He was arraigned in Scotia Village Court and was released on $500 bail. His boating privileges on the river were suspended until his next court appearance Sept. 13.
