Can cricket fix ailing park? League developing region's first formal facility for sport By Lauren Stanforth Published 11:58 p.m., Sunday, August 12, 2012
SCHENECTADY — Grout Park is choked with crab grass. Its basketball backboards are rusted; the hoops are gone.
But for the newly formed Schenectady Premier Cricket League, the park is perfect.
Its recent dedication is a giant step toward developing the first formal cricket facility in the Capital Region.
The new league used some donated stone dust and clay to complete work on the wicket.
The hard surface on which the cricket ball is bounced is a central part of the sport invented in England. Cricket is popular today in the United Kingdom and in the former British Empire, including India, Pakistan, the Caribbean and Guyana, where many of Schenectady's residents trace their heritage.
