In the late 40's early 50's GE employed around 45,000 people.  Today only a few thousand.
ALCO also provided good jobs in the City.
When the jobs leave, the population leaves.

Well Box, back in the 1950's the City, State, Feds and Metroplex didn't hand over billions to GE for only 350 battery jobs.

Where did those jobs go Box? To China? To Colorado (that's where the solar panel operation is out of).

We're becoming a bankrupt State because the Feds, State and Metroplex have NOT A CLUE about job growth!!!!!!!!!

Stop beating the GE dead horse ...it's costing the taxpayers billions for nothing.

Beating a dead horse???
I didn't make any excuses for any of it... just pointing out a fact... if there were jobs in Schdy, many of
the problems discussed here would decrease.

The folks who move back to nys state who are sick....are not moving back here for the 'superior health care'.....REALLY NOW!!

The ones who move back here are the snow birds who retired and left their family (kids) and move to a more 'user friendly' state...not to mention....no snow....and it isn't just Florida where they move too. They head 'south' but don't always aim for Florida.

As they grew older and needed more assistance, they move back 'home' where family can assist and take care of them. The government control health care now.....so it's the same old...same old no matter where ya live! Sucks ain't it?

I'm sorry but you really think this problem is related to what state you're in?

I don't see how that makes any sense really.  Are you saying they literally have no primary care physicians?

You do realize that physicians all over the country are protecting themselves from lawsuits by refering to other specialists?

Not trying to be disrespectful but I see literally no connection to what state one lives in with respect to physician quality.  If anything I would think that physicians would be leaving NYS because what we have now is unsustainable!  You can't have people leaving this state to the point we lose TWO representatives in Congress, but yet the state budget just keeps going up.

Unsustainable!

And DV - maybe those people are moving back for two reasons:

1)  They have family here to help take care of them
2)  NYS is more "progressive" in terms of Medicaid?  (Again completely unsustainably so...)

I literally use to be proud of paying as much in taxes as I do because well, I was giving more than my fair share to a country that I love.  Again the problem with it is that it is unsustainable and the system WILL collapse unless drastic measures are taken.

I have a lot of empathy for others in need, I really do, but that empathy does not trump absolute reality with respect to out of control spending on the local, state, and federal level.

Medicaid and family may be part of it -- but from what I have heard the quality of medical care and nursing homes in Florida is also a huge fact.   I understand that other southern states such as Alabama are even worse in those areas.   Again, Florida and many southern states may be attractive for retirees when they are still relatively healthy --- but when they get older and health detiorates they come back north.  I have a number of friends and relatives in Michigan and Wisconsin -- who retired down south only to move back to those states for better medical care and nursing home care when their health detiorated.

Many retirees move south UNTIL they get sick and when they do get sick they come back to New York where the medical care and nursing home is far superior.

Personally, I think Florida sucks ... just a huge swamp that people have tried to build on ... someday it will all return to the sea.

and they move back because their kids probably still live here...

nursing homes are better here....

Florida is a giant pasture.....
