ABC draws possible Tea Party connection with alleged Aurora shooter

ABC News has suggested that James Holmes -- the suspect in today's shooting in Aurora, Colorado -- may have a connection to the Tea Party.

ABC's Brian Ross reported this morning that there is "a Jim Holmes of Aurora, Colorado, page on the Colorado Tea party site... talking about him joining the Tea Party last year."
"Now, we don't know if this is the same Jim Holmes," Ross cautioned "but it's Jim Holmes of Aurora, Colorado."

ABC News is the only network or cable news channel to suggest a possible Tea Party connection, according to a survey of the TV Eyes database at 9:30 a.m. ET, though they did not verify that the two individuals were one and the same. (This is the Tea Party Patriots page on which Ross based his report.)

The report has already set off alarm bells on the right. At Brietbart.com, the conservative news site, Joel Pollak has accused ABC News of "scapegoating."

"How interesting that Ross and ABC News should think to look to the Tea Party website first--and to broadcast politically volatile information without verifying if that 'Jim Holmes' is the same as the suspect," Pollak writes. "Look for more scapegoating from the mainstream media and the Democrats in the hours and days to follow."

I have reached out to ABC News for comment on its report, and will update here if and when I hear back.

I saw that allegation in several places, but it's completely false.

There is a guy by the same name somewhere else in Colorado that is with the Tea Party, but it's not the same guy.

I worked with a drummer named James Holmes years ago, and it's not him either, in fact, he looks like Wesley Snipes.

I'm no fan of the teabaggers, but this is simply not true.

I for one -- am not ready to say it is NOT the work of a right OR left wing political extremist in pursuit of his nayboob agenda.  NO apology is in order from ANY news outlet as far as I am concerned.

Yea!!! Have some compassion for the NRA owned congressmen and senators who allow these nut cases
to continue their target practice on US Citizens.

This isn't some isolated incident in this country... The USA  averages 20 mass shootings a year.

Yup, the guy has apparent psychological problems, but nobody in the media is suggesting mind altering prescription drugs he may have been on or prescribed as a teenager.  He must be a Tea Party supporter.

Out of all the "may haves" I've heard from the drivel machine known as TV news, the only plausible one I've heard was possible paranoid schizophrenia.
That's the age at which it usually manifests itself, and that's the kind of thing that paranoid schizophrenics do.

I know of one that reminded me of Wally Cleaver, till one day out of the blue, he tried to murder his parents.

Yes its tragic but considering there is about 75-90 million gun owners in this country it really is a isolated incident. I guess the point being all the laws and regulations won't stop a nut case from killing people if he is set to do damage.

Molly Ivins put the problem this way:

Quoted Text
"I am not anti-gun. I'm pro-knife. Consider the merits of the knife. In the first place,
you have to catch up with someone in order to stab him. A general substitution of knives for
guns would promote physical fitness. We'd turn into a whole nation of great runners.
Plus, knives don't ricochet. And people are seldom killed while cleaning their knives."

I miss Molly!

I see DVOR is on his friend's list along with Gloryhole

"While Foreign Terrorists were plotting to murder and maim using homemade bombs in Boston, Democrap officials in Washington DC, Albany and here were busy watching ME and other law abiding American Citizens who are gun owners and taxpayers, in an effort to blame the nation's lack of security on US so that they could have a political scapegoat."
