The motivation for early railroad construction was very similar to that of all of the other transport initiative - namely to link the Atlantic with the interior. This time the early promotions were undertaken by those cities who had lost out in the "canal race". The first modern railway to be built in North American (following swiftly on its first innovation in England) was the Baltimore and Ohio, started in 1828 by a group of Baltimore businessmen concerned that the opening of the Erie canal threatened them and their city with a major long-term loss of trade and anxious to find their own route across the mountains. Similarly, Boston’s response to the Erie was the promotion of the Boston and Worcester Railroad (constructed 1830-34). Like the Baltimore venture, this was promoted by private capital but received considerable assistance from the State. Down in South Carolina, Charleston rose to the challenge in much the same way, with the promotion of the Charleston and Hamburg line (completed in 1833 and then the longest single route in the world), and even New York and Pennsylvania became involved in promotions, notwithstanding the success of their canal routes. By 1840 the north east of America had constructed nearly 3,000 miles of line. Notwithstanding its later start, this was nearly twice the mileage then operating in Europe. More than a third of that mileage was located in New York state and Pennsylvania, which already had strong canal facilities - they had seen the benefits of good transportation routes and were anxious to cement them. It is also notable that this rapid growth of the railway system had not been predicated on the simple import of British technology. From an early date it had been realised that "heavy" British locomotives and rolling stock were unsuitable to the lightly constructed and comparatively poorly engineered American track systems and the emergent American engineering industry had rapidly developed their own characteristic wood-burning engines and more flexible coaches/trucks. ox.

Obama's point all along on this issue is that 'others' helped this man build his business. To be specific, the Taxpayers of his community set up the infrastructure that let this mam build his business.
Looking at the pic I can see a very nice road leading to Ray's business. Did Ray build it? Of course not. Nor did Ray supply the water electricity sewer and internet connection necessary for Ray's lumber yard. If Ray has any employees working for him... did Ray educate those employees???
With out TAXPAYER help... Ray has built his business and hopefully it's a successful one. Now it's time for Ray top give back to the community that helped Ray succeed. PAY YOUR TAXES RAY! ... And smile when you do it cause you didn't build that business all by yourself!
