SCHENECTADY
YWCA eyes loan to avoid foreclosure

BY KATHLEEN MOORE Gazette Reporter

The YWCA will take out a loan to put an end to a series of foreclosure notices.
The Schenectady agency is yet again scheduled for a foreclosure auction, this time on July 19.
American Tax Funding has fi led foreclosure papers against the YWCA three times in the past seven months. Although the YWCA’s properties on Washington Avenue are tax-exempt, the agency must pay sewer and water fees, and it fell behind in 2004. The city sold the liens for those bills to ATF, which has added 21 percent interest.
Executive Director Rowie Taylor said the YWCA is struggling because it’s not bringing in enough money to pay the bills. She had hoped ATF would cut a deal and reduce the interest owed on the water and sewer fees.
“Our attorney’s been working with them to get some abatement on the interest,” she said. “They could’ve said, ‘Hey, we’re done. There’s no abatement on the interest.’ ”
Instead, ATF filed for foreclosure — again.
“It’s awful. It’s extremely embarrassing,” Taylor said. “It really affects our ability to be viewed as competent businesswomen in the community.”
The agency gave ATF $20,000 to begin paying off the bill after the first foreclosure notice in December. Then they began dickering over the interest.
“We just wanted to make sure it was the right amount,” she said. “I understand it’s their business, but they are really difficult to work with.”
The YWCA runs a battered women’s shelter and a city pool, as well as many services. Taylor said that work is not in jeopardy.
“It’s not going to happen,” she said of the foreclosure. “We play a hugely important role in the community and we certainly intend to continue that.”
    But it’s not easy.
“Cash flow is really diffi cult,” she said.
In December, the YWCA reached an agreement with ATF to immediately pay the principal of the sewer and water bill and then pay the interest back slowly. Taylor thought the agency owed $32,316 in principal, and said the YWCA paid $20,000 up front.
In March, ATF sued to foreclose again, for $12,000 in principal and interest on sewer and water bills. This time, Taylor said, the bills were for the YWCA’s property at 38 Washington Ave. She had believed the agreement in December included both that building and the main building at 44 Washington Ave. ................................>>>>..................................>>>>..........................http://www.dailygazette.net/De.....r00901&AppName=1

The city should be ashamed of themselves for turning over the owed money to a goon squad. The YWCA does some pretty good things for the battered women in this area and the city makes sure that no good deed goes unpunished for it. The city is sucking the life out of every resident and business except for the tax free ones located in the miracle 2 blocks of State St.

Subject says "YMCA", but it's about the YWCA.

Stop toying with this old mans brain so early in the morning.

The tax exempt YWCA is now facing tax foreclosure. Another only in Schenectady. Another renaissance update. Where is Death Ray and his taxpayer honey pot to help women in need? The DEM water and sewer fees are as insane as the property taxes.

Dems have war om women

"While Foreign Terrorists were plotting to murder and maim using homemade bombs in Boston, Democrap officials in Washington DC, Albany and here were busy watching ME and other law abiding American Citizens who are gun owners and taxpayers, in an effort to blame the nation's lack of security on US so that they could have a political scapegoat."

First.....if the Ywca can't generate funding to pay it's bills, it doesn't make sense that it would take out an additional debt (loan).  How are they going to pay for that?

Second.....I don't think the city wants the Y there anyways! The liberal dems that wanted and encouraged these non profits in...are now kicking them out! imho

Metroplex subsidizes the businesses run by friends and family but never helps those organizations that are trying to help the less fortunate and abused.

As far I know there has been no application to the Town of Rotterdam Planning Board for any YWCA at the Draper School or ANYWHERE else. One more example of a nayboob LIE.

Other than with the current planning board

If Schenectady wont Rotterdam will - it is part of the plan to build up police- EMS-paid fire just like the city did over the last 50 years

EXACTLY! Instead of flushing thousands on a unused bus station "park" and stunad bike paths to nowhere these DEM frauds should be helping abused women. They don't contribute enough to the DEM friends and family club-no? Another pathetic only in Schenectady story of how confiscatory DEM taxes AND fees are destroying the fabric of a once great City. It's the record taxes-stupid.

Stop throwing out red herrings DVOR. Admit that your DEM City stooges are incapable of budgeting and running anything. Dump horrible Marion Poterfield in the DEM City primary then make sure A-Jello loses again. Send a message even feeble minds can comprehend.
