GE only does what's best for GE, any positive outcome for where there facilities are located is purely accidental. Shouldn't GE also be paying taxes on the large profit they make every year?

YUP!  IT's TRUE!

'Nothing Good Ever Happens IN Schenectady... Ever!'

About a story that has new jobs coming to the area, and expansion of a major employer...
and there is just a faint spark of optimism from Bumbler and Tbird...
followed by a volcano of pessimism.

Truly amazing!

I compare what is happening in Schenectady to a Titanic passenger being excited while reading a menu saying Filet Mignon is being served in the dining room tomorrow night ....as they climb on a lifeboat

It's called reallity Box, viewing the situation of our country without the rose colored glasses on. This country is in real financial trouble and if the government makes the wrong decisions we will all suffer for it. Example is what we are experiencing right now, who caused the problems we face? They were caused by many years of governments mistakes thinking they were helping when in truth they were creating unintended consequences and tremendous problems that they don't know how to solve, all for votes and they won't accept responsibility for causing them.

Don't cheer too loud Box the battery plant could end up another Solyndra if they can't sell the batteries they produce.

Those batteries are pretty freaking amazing.   They will sell.  (Cost probably needs to come down though, that will come with time)

Jack do you think that we can build those batteries cheaper than China or Mexico? If we can't do that the batteries may be great but they won't sell. That's why Solyndra failed and other green projects have failed we can't compete with the very cheap labor in other countries.

No, not compared to China.

But compared to Mexico - well that's not so simple.  GE has been moving manufacturing back from Mexico...  I am not so sure the large appliance manufacturing attempts worked out well there.  Aside from safety issues for visitors.

The factory workers assembling those batteries do not have the pay or benefits that the longer term union employees have.  I would guess (total speculation) that the labor costs associated with the batteries at this point is not the highest portion of the product cost.

But your point is valid.  I do think the risks are pretty low though - as they spent $170 million to build the facility, and with reasonable labor costs, not currently a lot of incentive to move manufacturing elsewhere.  Especially with the synergies of GRC so close in Niskayuna.

See?  This is Terrible News.  I wonder why most other cities would love this happening to them.

Nobody said it was bad for Schenectady, just that you have to face facts that the USA, because we have such a good standard of living, we have a hard time competing on an international level with countries that pay their workers next to nothing to build the same products.
