GE officially opens battery plant, announces expansion plans

They are putting in another $70 million in equipment to ramp up manufacturing, and hiring another
100 workers to build more batteries. The plant is now up to 450 employees.

"This should be a billion-dollar business by the end of the decade," he said at the grand opening.
He also said GE will expand at the Schenectady-Rotterdam site if the battery market grows as he expects.

Oh that will change everything. All the workers who come in from Clifton Park will buy coffee here. The rest of the people who live here can continue to collect the fattest welfare deal in the land.

This news - the battery operation expansion - is just the beginning of what I predict will be more good news for Schenectady County.   The RENAISSANCE continues!

Talk to the GE union members about this "progress". This plant employed 50,000 after WWII-no? Union workers took a major hit to make this happen. It does NOTHING to improve the City's fiscal free fall nor improve imploding City property prices. In fact both are now worse. $5 MILLION more in your tax dollars flushed by the Metrograft Kratzs in a handout to General Electric-which paid NO Federal Corporate taxes last year. Mexican Radio should turn this mess around- lol.

I knew it!  Hundreds of jobs, and GE adding more production capacity and it is, as it ALWAYS IS...
M O R E   B A D   N E W S!

Maybe Schenectady officials could talk with neighboring counties to see if they would take this "BAD NEWS"
GE Battery plant off the tax rolls, and take those hundreds of jobs with them OUT OF SCHENECTADY
COUNTY.

Do you think Fulton County or Montgomery County, or possibly Schoharie County could help us out
and ask GE to move it's battery production, and those hundreds of jobs, to their county instead of
here???

Don't cheer too loud Box the battery plant could end up another Solyndra if they can't sell the batteries they produce.

YUP!  That is a possibility with every job in America... but right now, there are hundreds of jobs in Schenectady
GE, and they are planning to expand and add more jobs.
But those FACTS are considered a BAD THING on this board, while everywhere else in America, a factory
expanding it's business and adding jobs would be  A FANTASTIC THING.

The increase in jobs at the Schenectady plant comes at the expense of the plant in Colorado that is not going to expand, and yes it's good for Schenectady and bad for Colorado.

Sort of sounds like Villa Italia and the state jobs that came to Schenectady...not new jobs, but moved jobs.

So if GE closed down other plants and moved them to Schenectady GE, as it did in the past with the
Merrimack NH stator frame factory, (bringing jobs to Schenectady) and with the Fitchburg MA factory
(bringing jobs to Schenectady) and like it did with the Lynn MA generator business (bringing jobs to
Schenectady) etc etc etc,

Would this board have a consensus that it was a GOOD THING FOR SCHENECTADY?
I doubt it.

Yes, it would be good for Schenectady, but bad for the other communities, so in the end, its a no gain for the Country...

As a "soak the rich Dem", you should know all about that theory

The fact in itself that GE is going to employ more folks is a good thing....yes?

The future expectation is yet another.

We have some friends who work at the Great Global Foundries....and guess what?.......NO RAISES THIS YEAR! They didn't meet their projected expectations!!

So for 'today' it all sounds great.....but time will tell. We are still in a very volatile economy!! Unemployment is still in the double digits (if all are correctly counted), home values are plummeting, taxes are going to increase dramatically, businesses are hurting, foreclosures are still at an all time high, the boomers are hitting SS/medicare at the largest rate in history........so time will tell.

Global foundries is about 5 years late to the party...It will never be what was hoped for.
PC sales are in depression, and same will soon happen to Tablets and smartphones as the market gets saturated.
