here's a challenge for ya..............name me 10 good things that have happened in Schenectady in the last 20 years..................things that haven't adversely affected the tax-paying public........................I tried and couldn't, and I'm an extremely optimistic person..................take as long as you like, I'll be interested in seeing your list.........

I don't live in Schdy, nor do I follow their politics closely, but in any city, good things DO happen. I doubt that many posters on this board would recognize any of them... Pessimism seems to be the prevailing attitude here on that subject.
When you add..."things that haven't adversely affected the tax-paying public"... you change the intent of my original post. I don't know if Proctors is a net gain or net loss for Schdy. I know that Proctors IS a draw to the city, but whether or not it is a financial gain to the taxpayers, I don't know, and it would be difficult to measure. When I'm in Schdy, I often shop at Villia Italia, and Perreca's Bakery... I occasionally go to a show at Proctors, and shop at the Schdy Greenmarket. My few dollars that I spend there adds in some small way to the economic life of the city and it's taxpayers. If those businesses weren't in Schdy... I and probably many others, would never enter the city at all.
Since I don't follow the economics of Schdy taxpayers, I have no way of knowing... but I would guess that the recent GE expansion into Battery manufacture is a plus for the city. GE also centered their Wind Turbine monitoring business in Schdy creating new jobs there that didn't exist before... I would guess that's a plus.
Union College in Schdy is a plus for the city. A recent story from Union College Magazine 2011... Union expands to nearly 4,000 "The College nearly doubled its population for three days in April when 1,800 students and advisors from colleges across the country arrived for the National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR). The College had to turn away about 250 applications, a reflection of the growing popularity of undergraduate scholarly activity. Those who came represented 277 colleges and universities from as far west as Cal Tech, as far north as the University of Minnesota, and as far south as the University of Puerto Rico." Many of those people slept, ate and spend their dollars in the city... Union is a daily generator of funds for the city, as most colleges are, except Union's tuition demands that those students are of a higher income bracket than say a community college, so likely generate more income for the city than a community college. The teaching staff at Union also demands a much higher salary than a community school, and that staff lives and spends much of it's salary in the City of Schdy. I have attended a few lectures at Union. Again, I only spent a few dollars in the city... but with out Union College there, I would have spent NONE! I'm sure that Union also costs the city in some way... but overall a Healthy, Prosperous, Thriving Union College is a GOOD thing for Schdy, and any nearby city would be very glad if Union decided to move from Schdy to their city.
Back to my original point... good (and bad) things happen in every city. According to this board... Schdy is the exception.

All the good that happens in the City of Schenectady has enough bad that comes along for the ride that it can no longer be considered good. I mean, think about it. MVP moved downtown into a wonderful building. That sounds great. Problem? Jobs stolen from Rotterdam. Along with that, they also took taxpayer money in order to build their parking garage. I would be willing to guess that they're still under a PILOT, if they're paying any property taxes at all.
All the good that happens in the City of Schenectady has enough bad that comes along for the ride that it can no longer be considered good. .
One by one, each pessimist 'anti Schdy' poster is taking their turn proving my point...

Ok since ya don't live in the city, then you're clueless as to what's going on so ya get a pass......................so name me 5 good things to happen in the last 30 years................oh and as to the benefit of Proctors, my friend who owned a restaurant downtown had to go out of business because as she put it "There's nobody in this f**king downtown...............her place was 25 yards away from the entrance to Proctors..........even though business was halfway decent during events a Proctors, the rest of the time it was a ghost town..............so to be fair, I'll put the opening of Chez Daisie as a good thing, you have to give me 4 more...........think hard, cause the next one I can think of is Canal Square, which was heralded as the economic savior of downtown in it's day......remember that one?

Here's one good thing Gov Cuomo gave Son of Sam a lob job to get him out of town. Can he for the same for Mayor McCheese? There must be something for a self described "law enforcement expert". BTW, Chez Daisy closed over a year old!

How time does fly .........................the former owner is working 2 jobs to pay the taxes on her city properties, which she bought as an investment for her retirement...................she told me not long ago that in hindsight that prob'ly wasn't the smartest thing she's ever done......

LOL that's only 3, and I'm not convinced yet that 2 and 3 will be significant.....................here's the only point I'm tryin' to make, it's hard to find something good to say about a situation, when you've been kicked in the teeth for so long with no relief in sight.............and btw in not sure that the postings of a few folks here is reflective of the entire population, although I wouldn't be surprised if was....................me, whenever I felt down trodden or unhappy with my lot, I would just cut my losses and move on.........done it plenty, but I do understand that not everyone is cut out for the "gypsy" life and can't just leave.................and I sure do understand their frustrations, 'cause I've been hearing about this city rising from the ashes for over 30 years........still waiting
Alias, I don't doubt that Schdy has it's problems... but so do most NY state towns and especially Mohawk Valley towns. The mills closed, jobs left, businesses closed, crime increased, taxes went up and housing deteriorated. The same story in most area towns.

Another good with the bad. Used to be that you would be able to drive to Rotterdam to get those cannolis at a business that actually paid taxes. Now, they're downtown on the taxpayer dole. At least there's now another taxpaying business on their old site, one of Rotterdam's 5,000 pizzarias, Cusato's.

Much of this issue is perspective... Suppose instead of moving from Rotterdam to Schdy, they had moved from Rotterdam to Albany. A bad/bad situation. Instead you can at least see the positive in the present move to Schdy... a bad/good situation.
For some people the glass is half full... for others, it's half empty... On this board, the glass is always broken and there is no hope of fixing it and that is the way they like it. Any attempt to replace the glass will be met with negativity and severe disapproval.

Maybe it would have shown someone there's an issue? That's the same errant argument that it was better for Marcella's to leave an empty building and help more destroy part of Mount Pleasant. At least they stayed in the city...on the taxpayer dole. Maybe we would have been better off them moving out and another business getting both of these locations.
