Nothing "good" ever happens in Schenectady... If you should hear of anything "good" happening in
Schenectady... post it on this board... They will make sure that it's eliminated immediately.

Boxy... Property values and lack of rental tenancy pretty much say it all... Other than a 2 block radius surrounding Proctors, where the chosen few are making wads o' cash, the city is a war zone. It reminds me of Utica + drugs and violence.

I wouldn't doubt if someone got it on tape, the bus stop was pretty packed at the time right across the street.

If this guy jumped in front of my truck yelling he was going to shoot me while pointed his hands in my direction I probably would have filled in a pothole after I ran him over Hope he gets the help he needs, he clearly has something loose up stairs.

We had to go down state street this a.m. and we didn't see or hear anything. And that was at 9:40. Must not have been all that bad.

If what you're saying is that Schdy (+ Utica) are like most other Mohawk Valley mill towns, then I agree.  When
industry left and jobs left with them, what is left is Schenectady, Amsterdam, Ilion, Utica... on and on to a greater
or lesser degree.

It's tough to talk about things that are good when they are equally as bad as well.

For example, it could be said that it is good that Mexican Radio is coming to downtown (the on again-off again, and based on today's news).

While this could be something we might all otherwise cheer about, we all know that it will be balanced with the bad news----more stealing from the taxpayers that cannot afford it.

The building has an assessment now of somewhere in the vicinity of $1.4 million.

So look at it this way.  Most likely the taxpayers will fork over money to renovate the place.  But remember, the homeowners are being cited for assorted violations and ordered to fix them but they don't have the money to fix their houses because they are paying to fix up the properties downtown for property owners who have more than enough money in their own bank accounts to entirely fund the renos themselves.

Then after the building is renovated, the value of the property goes up just like if you renovate your kitchen your value increases (based on the building permit).   So, let's say the building that is currently worth $1.4mil, suppose it's assessed value increases to $2.0 mil.   It's 100% tax exempt now, it most likely be 100% exempt after, so it's NOTHING BUT BAD NEWS for the homeowners who will have their tax bills increased even more to cover the cost of that extra $0.6 mil in value.

I'm not saying it's guaranteed they will be 100% tax exempt, but based on the EVIDENCE, the dems WILL hand out yet another 100% tax exemption.

And what is happening in the city is that as the "assessed value" of downtown properties increases, the "taxable assessed value" of the city goes down resulting in the homeowners paying more and more.

Homeowners simply cannot afford the taxes anymore.

And why did all the factories leave?

Correct, taxes.

High labor costs and unions that wanted more in pay and benefits than the companies were willing or able to pay.

Cheap unskilled labor in the anti union south was a major factor.
GE moved to Greenville, then found out that the work ethic in the south was quite different than in Schdy.
I talked with a manager who was among the original people to facilitate the move south.  On opening day of
deer season, most of his employees just didn't show up.  No calling in sick, or vacation day... They just
Don't show up for work.

After the move south, GE moved to mexico then on to china.  Finally, GE "Partnered" with Japanese
Companies like Toshiba so that when GE won an order, it was often manufactured by Toshiba in
Japan.

Looks like someone wasn't able to compete.

It is hard to feel "good" when your annual property tax bill is about 10% of what your property is worth, and it goes up TWICE a year. I don't think it is necessary that I explain what "good" things I get out of my tax bill. We all know it isn't jack-schit. There really is not one thing to be proud of this city for in the slightest, anymore.

The truth of the matter is.......crime is at an all time high...taxes are at an all time high.....homes are losing their value daily........pitbulls, gangs and drug dealers/addicts rule the city.............people are walking away from their homes............infrustructure is failing...............there is blight in every neighborhood............pools can't be opened............the school is substandard.........there are now TWO Hamilton Hills..............and the freakin' list goes on and on and on!!!

.........and that is POSITIVELY the truth!!! And that is the good news folks!
