SCHENECTADY City eyes electric fleet BY KATHLEEN MOORE Gazette Reporter Reach Gazette reporter Kathleen Moore at 395-3120 or moore@dailygazette.com.
The city doesn’t have any electric cars yet, but Mayor Gary McCarthy wants to be ready. He wants to apply for a state grant to install six electric car chargers around City Hall and the downtown area, at a cost to the city of $12,000. “It’s not a huge amount of money, and it allows us to look to move our fleet,” McCarthy said. “If today someone came in and said, ‘Here’s a great deal on a car,’ we can’t use them until we have the charging station in place.” He wants to apply jointly with the county and Schenectady County Community College. The county would benefit from chargers near the county office building, while SCCC could put chargers in its main student parking lot, McCarthy said. Each charger costs about $10,000. A state grant would cover 80 percent. If chargers are to be placed at SCCC, the electrical conduits must go under Erie Boulevard, so the work must be done soon. “We’re digging up Erie Boulevard. Now’s the cheapest time to run the conduits,” he said. ........................>>>>...........................>>>>.........................http://www.dailygazette.net/De.....r00101&AppName=1
What about your $7 MILLION City deficit? More nothing from the DEM green idiots. The City DEM morons should be prohibited from spending another dime by Gov Cuomo. Denial does not solve the McCheese DEM created deficit.
First mcmayor should check the stats to see exactly how many folks actually own electric cars in the area.
Electric cars are nothing new. They were being promoted back in the 70's when, as like today, there was a 'conserve energy' scare, and folks were waiting for the projected 'ice age' that never came to fruition!
So electric cars have been around for 30+ years!!! How many folks actually own one and actually 'want' to own one?
Another waste of taxpayer's money.....imho of course

Be careful of what you suggest. McC might decide to pay some political hacks $50,000 for a STUDY to find out how many actually own electric cars. And then spend the $12,000 after that.
When is this mayor going to start addressing the financial crisis and look to demanding that the millionaires pay their fare share rather than having the overtaxed financially struggling homeowners pay?
Just like his lame brain idea of spending taxpayers money to try to sell houses. How many houses ON THE TAXPAYER FUNDED OPEN HOUSE PROGRAM have actually sold? AND what was the actual sale price in relation to the asking price AND in relation to the city's claim of full market value? He spends the taxpayers money to TRY to give some business to his hacks, but then refuses to divulge the results to the taxpayers.
Since the city is in DIRE FINANCIAL CRISIS, can ANYONE answer the question of what cuts has McC made to address this $5 mil deficit?
What a joke.

Optimists close their eyes and pretend problems are non existent. Better to have open eyes, see the truths, acknowledge the negatives, and speak up for the people rather than the politicos and their rich cronies.
And now McCarthy's response to more cameras addes in the city at bus stops
Quoted Text
Schenectady Mayor Gary McCarthy said the presence of the cameras does more than deter crime. It aids the city's economic development efforts by making the city safer, he said, and it enables the city to monitor streets for littering and snow plowing issues.
So this plan should reduce the daily expenses to the city what with all the city vehicles being driven home everday. Now we get it-a win-win. What must be weighed is the initial start up costs, maintenence of new equipment and electric rates, versus the status quo of the current system. Should not be considered if it's just the usual $$$ grab for a preffered vendor with the latest/greatest, which in the long run costs the city more despite quoted initial savings, which is a common ploy to sell the idea.
They ought to be RollsRoyces too. Electric Rolls Royces. Nice. With big horns on the hood, and bullet proof glass.

In other business, the City Council unanimously approved the mayor’s request to apply for a state grant for electric car charging stations. Council President Denise Brucker said the stations could bring in revenue eventually, while Councilman Carl Erikson noted that grants will no longer be available when electric cars are commonplace. The grant would cover $8,000 of the $10,000 cost of each station, with the city installing up to four stations around City Hall and the downtown. The county and Schenectady County Community College may apply jointly with the city, adding more stations downtown and in the main student parking lot. McCarthy wants the stations to also serve as parking meters. Drivers would swipe a credit card to pay for electricity, so he has asked the manufacturers if it is possible to also accept meter payments by card.
