Schumer: Help bring Greek yogurt to schools Associated Press
NORWICH, N.Y. — Sen. Charles Schumer asked federal officials Monday to make it more affordable for public schools to serve Greek yogurt, saying it would expose more students to the high-protein food and boost an already-booming business in New York.
Schumer sent a letter to Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack asking that he modify the federal school lunch program to incorporate Greek yogurt as a high-protein meat alternative.
Current school nutritional standards treat Greek yogurt the same as traditional yogurt, despite the higher protein content and cost of Greek yogurt, Schumer said. He said a change in standards would make it easier for schools to purchase smaller, less costly servings of Greek yogurt.
"With a stroke of a pen Secretary Vilsack could provide healthier foods for New York's school children and an economic boost for yogurt makers and dairy farmers, two of the state's most important industries," Schumer said, adding that tofu was recently given its own standards as a high-protein meat alternative..............................>>>>..........................>>>>...........................http://online.wsj.com/article/AP4246bcf1bc34415084a04c4369c122b7.html
I appreciate him trying to push the market on a product that is made here in NY, and I am a BIG customer of Chobani, however, if they push for the government money, I might change to a different brand. There's also other yogurt companies here in NY (and a little closer to home) that make Greek Yogurt (Fage).
Schumer's proposal makes sense and I believe it would benefit ALL companies that make Greek yogurt not just Choban.
One more thing -- the Federal programs for school lunch programs are full of examples of bone-headed provisions that benefit certain interests from certain states --- such as the ones that consider french fries a vegetable which really was designed to benefit potato farmers from Idaho.
I may not always agree with Senator Schumer but at least he is doing something that A) makes sense and B) actually may benefit New York State ------- and it he is one of our few (and i am trying to be kind by suggesting that there is more than one who is in this category) federal legislators who that can be said of.

Leave it to you to favor something that makes the taxpayers food the bill for the parents who don't take responsibility for feeding their kids. Yep, everything government. Government bakeries, government burritos, government theaters, government hair-salons, government hotels, and now, government yogurt for children. But of course, you don't know the joys or responsibilities of being a dad or a mom (mamas' boys never do).

2nd - reducing regulations on business is generally a good idea .. but look what happened when they reduced regulations on the banking industry ?
3rd - as for the matter of whether I eat yogurt and, if do, which brand do I purchase - that is not relevant to the discussion. Bringing up irrelevant matters and other attempts at personal attacks are unwarranted in a civil discussion.

the issue is not if yogurt (no matter what kind) is a healthy food or not!
I take issue with the fact that it is the 'nanny state government' that is legislating and forcing it on the people!!! Leading the sheople to believe that it is the food that is causing obesity and the other drummed up ideas.........WHEN IN FACT...........generations that came before ate MUCH worse by today's standards, and the 'government statistics' prove that those folks were NOT as obese as this present generation........AND WHY????? Everyone sits on their fat a$$es all day!!!!
The most physical activity that folks get today is by carrying a new computer in the home. Carrying a new microwave in a kitchen. Picking up a new powered lawnmower at a store. Opening their pools. The problem here? The fact that there IS a FEDERAL school lunch program. Yes, I would support eliminating it, as it's not their business to get involved in. If the STATE wished to start a lunch program, then it would be possible to consider it, but at that point, I still don't know if I would be for it or against it.

And look what happens if I take an ice cream cone outside today. Does that mean that I should never be allowed to take any other food outside on any given day? Just because something happens in one case does not mean that it's going to happen in other cases. And what is the issue you have a problem with in the deregulation of the banks? Personally, the issue with the banks is the Federal Reserve, which is NOT run by the Federal Government, ironically, one of the JOBS of the Federal Government, as per the Constitution.

Showing that I make a free market decision to purchase a product and inquiring as to the fact of whether you do or not prior to discussion with you in regards to your request to give a company my money through the Federal Government WOULD be RELEVANT to the situation. As far as personal attacks and civil discussion, well, we all know that you love personal attacks and can't carry a civil discussion if it was on an 8-track tape in a backpack that someone put on you.
