Tough sell on food stamp cuts
Gillibrand faces battle in bid to restore $4.5B reduction

WASHINGTON — U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand is fighting an uphill battle to restore a $4.5 billion reduction in food stamps, arguing that low-income families should not bear the burden of cutting the nation's budget deficit.

The 46 million beneficiaries of food stamps — 3 million of whom are in New York — "did not spend this nation into debt, and we should not be trying to balance the budgets on their backs," the New York Democrat said on the Senate floor earlier this month.

The cuts to food stamps, now called the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program or SNAP, are included in the Farm Bill now before the Senate. As the product of negotiations between Senate Agriculture Committee chairman Sen. Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich., and ranking Republican Sen. Pat Roberts of Kansas, the $969 billion bill is the rarest of commodities on Capitol Hill these days: an act of bipartisanship...........................>>>>.......................>>>>...............Read more: http://www.timesunion.com/local/article/Tough-sell-on-food-stamp-cuts-3640844.php#ixzz1y8fInwYx

food stamps are restitution for a civilization that lied to the masses about the need NOT to subsist on their own plot of land, to let someone else control the food/water supply.....

"While Foreign Terrorists were plotting to murder and maim using homemade bombs in Boston, Democrap officials in Washington DC, Albany and here were busy watching ME and other law abiding American Citizens who are gun owners and taxpayers, in an effort to blame the nation's lack of security on US so that they could have a political scapegoat."

Who is taking food out of whose hand in that picture. The guy on the right thinks he deserves the fruit of another man's labor without doing a damn thing to earn it.

Food Stamp Vote In Senate Blocks Bid To Restore $4.5 Billion In Aid
Posted: 06/19/2012 7:47 pm Updated: 06/19/2012 8:09 pm

WASHINGTON -- The Senate overwhelmingly rejected a bid to preserve some $4.5 billion in food stamps funding, as part of the massive farm bill, on Tuesday.

The amendment to keep that spending in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, offered by Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.), failed 33 to 66. Sixty votes were needed to pass.

Gillibrand had hoped to prevent food aid cuts in the $969 billion bill by trimming the guaranteed profit for crop insurance companies from 14 to 12 percent and by lowering payments for crop insurers from $1.3 billion to $825 million.

"We all here in this chamber take the ability to feed our children for granted. That is not the case for too many families in America," Gillibrand said just before the vote. "Put yourselves for just a moment in their shoes. Imagine being a parent who cannot feed your children the food they need to grow. It's beneath this body to cut food assistance for those who are struggling the most among us."

The cuts target the so-called heat-and-eat initiative in which 14 states automatically make families eligible for more food aid if they receive even $1 in help paying their utility bills. The Congressional Budget Office estimated the decrease would amount to about $90 a month for an affected family, representing a quarter of its food budget..............................>>>>...................................>>>>.............................http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/06/19/food-stamps-vote-senate-kirsten-gillibrand_n_1610590.html

A good point Henry...
Who is the man who ends up getting the food in the picture... The Republican... not the man who needs
the food... not the man who earned the dollars to buy the food... but the REPUBLICAN!

Food stamps should NOT be handed out freely JUST because someone is receiving heating assistance.

Both services should be applied and approved for 'separately'.....not in conjunction with!

No one is taking food stamps 'away'..........just removing it from the heating assistance program.

If anyone knows anyone who works for any social service department.....they will know this to be a fact!

I don't see the problem!!

Maybe the republican is teaching him nothing is free in this world and if he wants food he must work for it

maybe it's folks waking up and realizing that the system's control of 'clean' food water results in the restitution system.......

removing from a person their ability and drive to support/feed/water/house oneself is a very way to lead,,,,,reps/dems alike

I'll have to remember that!  I can let the taxpayers pay for my lift tickets if I list them as "SKI THERAPY"
