Group home operator shuts smoking rooms to save lives
Group home operator bans tobacco use to encourage better health

SCHENECTADY — A mentally ill person is twice as likely to smoke as other members of the public, and people with serious mental illnesses die, on average, 25 years earlier.

The causes of death are largely due to high rates of smoking-related diseases like cancer, heart disease and stroke.

Leaders at Mohawk Opportunities made the decision to ban smoking from their group homes after looking at the statistics. The Schenectady-based nonprofit serves about 225 people and runs four homes for the mentally ill and people who are HIV-positive. I've always considered that to rule over people's choices one has to be crazy.....ie: scary mayor bloomberg and company.....the emperor's clothes
