That is funny, I might have to use that The real reason they ask you that though is to get you to admit guilt, most people are to honest and will admit they were speeding not knowing they just screwed themselves from fighting the ticket. If the cop goes to court that day he will use that against you and you will probably lose. Best advice is to keep your mouth shut and never incriminate yourself, if the cop asks you if you know why he pulled you over play dumb and just shrug your shoulders.

It used to happen to me all the time when I used to get out of work vary late at night. The cops are fishing. They have to pull somebody over, or it will look like they didn't do anything all night, and if you're the only thing that's moving at that hour, YOU are the one that is getting pulled over.
I had a cop ask me the same thing, and I replied "because it's 4:30AM and you're hoping to catch a DWI?" No he was not amused. Their egos are more tender than the backside of a 3 year old girl, and they need to be kissed up to on a constant basis.
The cop ended up giving me a ticket for a dirty license plate, despite the fact that it wasn't even dirty because the car was just washed a couple of days ago. "But officer, it's not even dirty" "Well, who do you think they're gonna believe?"

I don't have a love affair with any police department. They are self serving at best......HOWEVER.......It isn't just the police departments. The entire justice system sucks!!! Why should these self serving police officers bust their a$$es and put their lives on the line when the self serving, weak, incompetent judges just kop a plea bargin and let the scum back on the streets???
