I stand by my post. The river was no doubt polluted by the floods, but the Mohawk has a strong current and much of the pollution was temporary. I wouldn't advocate eating the fish, or drinking the water, but compared to many rivers in the USA... the Mohawk is very clean.

Eat no more than one meal (one-half pound) per week of fish from the state's freshwaters, the Hudson River estuary, Upper Bay of New York Harbor (north of the Verrazano Narrows Bridge), Arthur Kill, Kill Van Kull, Newark Bay, Raritan Bay west of Wolfe's Pond Park, East River to the Throgs Neck Bridge and Harlem River, except as otherwise recommended.
The problem is that much of the contaminants that the flood washed into the river is deposited on the soil where the flood water covered and will get washed into the river every time it rains. The Mohawk is much cleaner than when I was a kid but it will take time for the river to cleans itself again. I took a ride along the Schoharie Creek from Prattsville to Schoharie Crossing and that stream will never be the same again and that drains into the Mohawk. The Mohawk will take time to heal itself.

Sure, but it will. I just think using the argument that the river is smelly or not a viable recreation site as a reason not to develop along it's bank's is bogus. How the projects are being funded should be the real issue. If development is on the taxpayers backs then I'm against it.
Absolutely and that's from all waters not just the 'hawk.
Although in '96 when my buddy returned to the area and I raved about the fishing and took him out to show him he kept two 3 lb. bass home and cooked them. I did caution him about it.
Much of the problem is that the little fish that are caught are released, while the larger ones are kept. Fish accumulate toxins over time, so often, the larger the fish, the more toxins per pound.

There have been some real nice Bass, Nor lunge and Walleye Pike caught in the Mohawk in the last 10 years but I wonder how much damage was done to the fishing due to the flooding. It would be great if Schenectady had a nice waterfront area developed that would actually help to lower the high taxes that the residents are currently paying. If they build it they should have to pay taxes on it.

I agree, that's why I don't have a problem with developing there. That raises a question though. Are the restaurant and banquet house metroplex funded? I didn't see anything in the article about metroplex funding the hotel, other than him being unsure if it qualified for tax breaks. If he's not using taxpayer money than I see no problem with it. He knows where he's building, and if he's using his own funding, then he knows the risk.
As far as the fishing goes streams and rivers are constantly changing and unless the habitat is totally destroyed the fish will be there. A pretty good indication will be later this year when the bass tournaments heat up.
the dead calf was from the barge that GE kept on the river to dispose of the 'deformed' and too poisoned animals it experimented on.....the rest were freely handed out to the Schenectadians as good will.....no wonder....IT IS in the water........and the food and the air and familia etc etc......
I learned this from a gentleman I had the pleasure of nursing and he used to tell ALL KINDS of stories.....some very hairy ones......

Geesh you would be better off eating road kill Even up north like Indian lake I remember seeing a sign that warned people about eating the fish.

I wonder if the New Hotel that's Proposed for Glenville, will serve Road Kill in their restaurant?

Hmmmm.........................just spent a few minutes looking over the forum rules...........guess they need to add "going off topic will result in a two week ban".........and I do hope road kill will be added to all menu's in city and county eating establishments................also maybe we could harvest the dead fish floating in the river and add them to the menu's....................."Life has become immeasurably better since I have been forced to stop taking it seriously."
I've always found those NY Dept of Health 'fish' warnings a waste of time for me. If I had to survive on only the fish that I caught... I'd a starved long ago.
