Theft from Schoharie Recovery effort Reported by: Walt McClure Email: waltmcclure@fox23news.com Print Story Published: 4/17 8:34 pm Share Updated: 3:38 am
A shed behind Schoharie Reformed Church on Main Street has a new lock after someone used a stolen set of keys to get into it TWICE, once between Saturday night and Monday morning, and again by Tuesday morning.
Taking power tools and other items worth about $1,000.
Schoharie Recovery Director Josh DeBartolo opens the shed that now holds mostly wheelbarrows, instead of power drills and staple guns and plastic storage totes.
Josh DeBartolo says, "Every homeowner here lost their tools, so coming to us and being able to have volunteers go and use those tools is one less thing that's on a homeowner."
But those tools weren't signed out for projects - they were stolen sometime between when volunteers finished up Saturday and when DeBartolo and Schoharie Area Long Term Recovery Executive Director Sarah Goodrich came back Monday after Easter and found the shed unlocked and items missing.
At first they thought the keys had been misplaced, but after Tuesday morning's discovery of more missing items, they knew the keys were stolen.
Senior Schoharie Police Investigator Ray Hoy says only what was easy to carry away was taken.
"None of it was heavy," said Ray Hoy. "They left some things that were heavier, like a generator, so everything was easily portable, and everything was new in the box so it would be easily resold or marketed."
Sarah and Josh say too much good has been done, and will be done, to let this hurt the effort to repair and rebuild so many homes and lives broken following Irene's August wallop...........................>>>>.................>>>>.................................http://www.fox23news.com/news/.....KlwXVjkQ.cspx?rss=39
