Prom spending soars

A recent national survey shows people are spending some big bucks on prom this year, 33 % more than last year.

High School Junior and Senior, Morgan Mclellan and Jessica Houbre knew exactly what they wanted while picking out dresses at Apropos Prom and Bridal in Albany.

"I want to be a princess," said McLellan.

For some moms, it is hard to say no to their little girls and say yes to a strict budget.

"For me it's my baby and she is going away so it's kind of like a fairly tale budget," said Rebecca McLellan, Morgan's mom.

A recent survey by Visa shows prom spending has surged by 33 % nationwide.

Susan Newkirk said she and her daughter Victoria had a long talk about spending.

"Victoria and I had a serious values discussion, but being the mom we got a little over budget. Since her brothers didn't go, we had a credit," she said.

Sindi Saita, owner of Apropos says people are a lot less reluctant this year to spend an astronomical amount of money on prom.

"People are buying shoes and jewelry and they are not thinking twice about it," she said.

The survey also showed families in the northeast will spend an average of $1900 on prom this year................................>>>>......................>>>>..........................http://www.fox23news.com/news/local/story/Prom-spending-soars/G4G93nJDNEi9ICYmnUlXAw.cspx?rss=39

I find that hard to believe, some may get to that price but I highly doubt that is the average. To me it sounds like a phony number to get people to, how should I put this, keep up with the Joneses

Both of my sons went to Mohonasen. On prom night, I COULD NOT believe how much money was being spent. It was obvious as soon as you saw the hummer limos start pulling up to the school. Add to that, the girls hair, dress, and shoes, and it was crazy. I don't know if its parents re-living their youth through their kids or not, but it was really pathetic.

Our neighbor's daughter and many of her friends are 'renting' gowns! They said that they get the best of the best at a fraction of the cost and not left with something they will never wear again.

But I have to agree with you 55....are these parents living vicariously through their children???

Outrageous.

And the other thing....it's who can outdo the other.....

these kids feel it is their entitlement to have the best.....where do they get that from...

also, Jersey shore....top model......and a lot of reality shows......especially the Kardashians....whom many model or try to model after...

Society has a screw loose if they think that celebs can set the standards for the mood of this generation.

Parents cannot or do not know how to say NO anymore.....and the kids can't even spell it....

it all starts with those 'cute' pants the kindergardeners wear that have ANGEL written on the a$$ of the pants they wear....and the parents call it 'cute'.....
