Just heard on the radio, NY has collected 23 BILLION DOLLARS in Cigarette taxes in the past 5 years. 23,000,000,000.00! They've raised the prices in upstate NY to over $9, sometimes $10/pack .. where in other states it's less than half that. Supposedly this was done to increase the "stop smoking" program and reduce tobacco "marketing".
Here's the kicker - if suddenly everyone in NY stopped smoking (or a large percentage) - where would NY come up with the $ revenue? Only 4% of the money collected (a generous estimate) is spent toward the "stop smoking" programs ... the rest goes into the general fund. We've gotta make up that $ from somewhere.
I'm sure glad I brought a good supply (10+ cartons) before I came up here .. it's time to get a friend to send me more, for personal use of course. I paid $42/carton ... here they're $95+ depending on the market and quantity purchased.

You both have it backwards... The taxpayers of NY subsidize the smokers... not the other way around.

My wife and i quit smoking due to the cost. I just feel bad for some people i know who are already poor, and paying 10 bucks a pack to smoke.. It adds up quick.. I feel bad 1)That they are too stupid to quit 2) that the taxes are so freaking high on them. But that's what's great about America, you can do something about it, you can work harder (more) to afford cigs, or quit smoking.

It's stupid that a small percentage of elitist in America feel they are obligated to empower their legislator to pass a law taxing a LEAGAL product they do not use, in order to detour those that do choose to use tobacco, because of course, they know best.
When a Snickers candy bar is taxed up to $10 a bar, and a person like box provides you with statistics justifying the tyrants in government excessive taxation, I won't call you stupid when you choose to purchase and enjoy the candy bar you've always enjoyed, I will call the totalitarians like box the totalitarians they are.
