Today is the last day for submitting a senior's enhanced Star exemptions... possibly that's it.

I'm assuming it was something to do with his applying for the senior star, I heard him say that an item they were requesting was never needed before and not in the letter they sent him.

In the past Schenectady required as all municipalities do a drivers license to prove age for senior star, and only of person 65 or older.

This year Schenectady is requiring either drivers license or voter ID card of both husband and wife, when in fact the only requirement as per NYS law is the proof of age of the person 65 or over.

So I don't know the exact reason this man was upset other that what he said about item not needed and not in letter assessors office sent him, just know he was very upset.

Then the next person came in and another issue developed, but i was leaving : )

My Mom and stepdad live in Albany, they get there application in the mail and only have to mail in their proof of income. They do not have to go to the assessors every year. Which only makes sense as they photocopy your license the first time you apply and have it in their files.

But of course Sch'dy must make it hard for the seniors. As tomorrow is the last day to apply hope they are all able to get there.

Bumble-I actually thought of Riggi and if I had been able to would have told the guy to get in touch with him, but he was gone before I was done.

I thought that the senior STAR just continues from year to year.  Last we did it for my inlaws, something was done with the state tax dept and automatically continuing it.   Maybe it's changed, My brother-in-law is an accountant and so is keeping all the records

I don't believe the city can change the rules.

Although there are the other senior income related exemptions for property taxes (as opposed to school taxes).

The city probably is not having many new STAR applications, they haven't had many new homeonwers!

I think the enhanced senior STAR is dependent on income... so a Federal tax statement is needed every year
to determine benefits based on that years income.

I know at one time mailing it in was all that was needed.  Of course keep in mind this was 8 years ago so who knows what has changed.

I was attending to my parents finances ect. and live 300 miles away.  My brother sent me the renewal application and I mailed it back to the town.  Of course dad had done it the year before but I don't know if he had to go in person then but I didn't.

I think Schenectady may be wrong on this one.  Not the first time.  I will be curious what you find out from Riggi.

Basic STAR
Submit Form RP-425 Application for School Tax Relief (STAR) Exemption to your local assessor. By signing the form, you are attesting that your income for tax year 2010 was below $500,000.

Enhanced STAR
Submit Form RP-425 Application for School Tax Relief (STAR) Exemption to your assessor.
Demonstrate that you meet the income requirement annually in one of two ways:
Apply annually with your assessor - Complete your STAR application and send it to your assessor with a
copy of your income tax return(s) for the appropriate income tax year;
or
Authorize our department to verify your income eligibility -

Same here. I'm still running the 'Swami MkII.
I hate how Apple keeps on making them obsolete, and doesn't even offer any updates.
I'm just going to wait until the MkIV comes out in May.

We do the enhanced star for an elderly relative of ours. It was only a one time deal in person.....the rest is done by mail. Been doing it for them for 5 years now. And their form said that a couple who made over $64,000(I think) was not eligible for the enhanced star.

Elderly Couple making over $64,000... Doesn't need an exemption.

had to prove who lived with me and provide a letter from each of them.....and then go in person.

seems to me that it should be automatic and a renewal....and then you get different answers...

just another way of doing business in Rotterdam...
