CAPITAL REGION Want a good job? Region among best places to look Forbes ranks area fourth in the nation BY JUSTIN MASON Gazette Reporter
IBM’s powerful new 32-nanometer chip is a great example of the Tech Valley initiative at work. Early research on the chip technology was done at the University at Albany’s College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering. The resulting design spurred production at IBM’s chip fabrication plant in East Fishkill and at GlobalFoundries newly opened Fab 8 campus in Malta. The chip production is the fi rst project for GlobalFoundries, which now employs roughly 1,200 people. Meanwhile, CNSE is building an additional 500,000 square feet onto its existing 800,000 square feet, an expansion that is expected to add roughly 800 workers to the 2,600 people already employed at the campus. “That really speaks to the concept of Tech Valley,” GlobalFoundries spokesman Travis Bullard said. “That’s a whole stream of economic activity that’s happening here in the same geographic footprint.” And perhaps that’s why the Capital Region’s projected job growth drew recognition from Forbes. The magazine ranked the Albany-Schenectady area among the top cities for jobs in an article published Monday. “Albany, like a lot of the cities on this and other lists, is a state capital. But Schenectady has a lot going on as well. GE has its main research and development campus outside of town, is adding 500 employees at its alternative-energy division and is building a 350-employee battery factory as well,” the article states. “And AMD spinout GlobalFoundries is building a $7 billion, 2 million-square-foot chip-fabrication plant in Malta that the company says is one of the largest new manufacturing projects in the world. It will employ 1,600 after production starts next year.” ...................>>>>....................>>>>......................http://www.dailygazette.net/De.....r00102&AppName=1

"Still, the region remains more than 7,000 jobs behind the 345,200-strong workforce it had in December 2007. But steady growth in the research and development sector could forecast a bright future."
The hundreds of jobs being created by GE is not going to compensate for the other hundreds leaving. Also, everything is "projected"..."could forecast growth"...all which we've heard from Metroplex - $100 million of dollars worth for what?
GE has no loyalty to this area and will most likely move to a tax-friendly State once given the chance.
We continuously put our City's entire future in the empty hands of GE. It failed us in the 70's and will do so again. We need to be smarter and find more businesses to spur our economy..not simply count on one.

Let's be reminded that ALL of these jobs were created/relocated at the cost to the TAXPAYERS!!!
How many of these jobs were created/relocated with the business's private profits/funds?
The streets that lead to these creation/relocation are paved with the overburdened taxpayer's $$$$..............no matter how ya spin it! |

FORBES is confirming what I have been saying all along --- Schenectady is undergoing an economic RENAISSANCE under the leadership of the Democratic Party.

Uh NO. Tell us DV, PROVIDE THE EVIDENCE of an economic "renaissance" FIRST of all, the report does NOT single out Schenecady. Sure a SMALL HANDFUL of jobs, jobs which have cause the taxes to increase!!!! Provide the EVIDENCE that home values are increasing in Schenectady. Provide the EVIDENCE that people are buying homes in Schenectady. The report speaks of the capital region. and the EVIDENCE shows that areas OUTSIDE of Schenectady are getting better. Provide the EVIDENCE ---of the statement you copied and pasted from dem political propaganda---that proves that the county tax bills are the lowest since the 1950's. I have provided the EVIDENCE that homes are selling better AND INCREASING in value in capital region areas OUTSIDE of Schenectady. Provide the EVIDENCE that the homeonwers in the city are being relieved of the excessive tax burden. The EVIDENCE actually PROVES that people in Schenectady are paying multiple times over. First, the taxpayers suffer via tax breaks given to GE. Then the taxpayers are paying to build/renovate buildings downtown (but they can't afford to fix their own homes). Then the taxpayers are being forced to pay the taxes of tax delinquents. Then the taxpayers are being forced to pay their own property and school taxes AND then they have to pay the taxes of the downtown properties/businesses even though those connected with downtown are millionaires AND can afford to pay their own taxes---And I HAVE provided the EVIDENCE of that from official records. So, produce your EVIDENCE that shows homeonwers are paying lower taxes, that houses are selling easily, that the TAXABLE tax base is increasing, that people are CHOOSING to stay in the city, etc. |
