SCHENECTADY, NY - Two children were found alone in an apartment as a fire occurred nearby in Schenectady on Monday.
Schenectady police say a small fire happened on the 600 block of Lansing Street and was quickly dealt with.
The fire led authorities to a neighboring residence where the children were found unattended and uninjured. The children are two-years-old and four-months-old. The whereabouts of the parents are unknown at this time.
The children are safe and in protective custody. The Youth Aid Bureau and Child Protective Services are involved in the investigation.
No further details have been released at this time

It happened at 653 Lansing Street. Police said the woman left the children in their own apartment, and then went into an empty apartment nearby and set clothing on fire.
Neither child was injured. They said the woman left the building and has not yet been found

SCHENECTADY — The mother of a 2-year-old girl who was allegedly found wandering outside a smoke-filled apartment building said she left the child and her 5-month-old sister with their grandfather.
Standing at the doorway of the three-story building 651-653 Lansing St., Jessica Lupi said Tuesday she had left her first-floor apartment for a few hours about 3:30 p.m. Monday to look for her boyfriend. SCHENECTADY — A 21-year-old woman charged with torching a pile clothes in a vacant apartment and fleeing the building without her two young children would serve six months in jail under a proposed plea deal, according to attorneys involved with the case.
During Tuesday's arraignment in Schenectady County Court, Jessica Lupi pleaded not guilty to arson, burglary, criminal mischief and child endangerment in connection with the Feb. 21 blaze.
On the felony arson charge alone, she faced up to 25 years in prison if convicted.
Her attorney, Stephen Signore, was hopeful Tuesday that Lupi would accept the plea bargain, but Judge Karen Drago wanted time to review the possible agreement and adjourned the case to Thursday.
At that time, Lupi could plead guilty to fourth-degree arson, a felony, in exchange for six months behind bars and five years' probation.
