ALBANY, NY - Governor Andrew Cuomo's new effort will help fight to curb gun violence in Albany and Schenectady.

Gov. Cuomo is setting aside a million dollars for anti-gun efforts in Albany, Schenectady, and four other cities. It is part of the governor's new effort to create community based anti-firearm programs.

Two noted academics who have seen success with the community based initiatives will help design programs for each of the targeted cities. Newburgh, Bronx, Brownsville, and Manhattan will also take part in the program.

Additionally, Gov. Cuomo is creating a state-wide anti-violence ad campaign and a gun tip line to report illegal weapons.

Obviously PROVE POSITIVE that Schenectady is is full of guns, not that we intelligent people din't know this because of all the shootings.   Cheerleaders and the dems have been trying to pretend nothing happens, there's a renaissance in the city, you know, but they can't provide any proof that any good people are choosing to move into the city, they can't provide any proof that home values are going up, like the values ARE going up outside of Schdy, they can't provide any proof that houses sell quickly.

It will probably be another gun buy back program where they pay $50 for an old useless gun because any decent gun in good condition will sell for a lot more than that on the street.

yeah, he's gonna have his girlfriend back a bunch of cookies and cupcakes to trade for guns......

I wouldn't be able to tell you if a gun is illegal or not.....

it only takes what's in someone's head to deem something 'illegal'

This is a waste of taxpayers money.....any "street" gun will remain hidden and unattainable.

the perps are smarter than the law....and crime will escalate because of it...

Perps do not "narc" on one another...there is a brotherhood and fear....that's why some crimes

are not solved and/or reported.....the invasion into this community is ongoing...

Your comment about the nature of the guns turned in is not without merit.  Although, any gun sitting around not being used is better off being turned in.

When you see the pic of the guns turned in looks like mostly rifles.

This program will not get the criminals automatics off the streets.

The Second Amendment (Amendment II) to the United States Constitution is the part of the United States Bill of Rights that protects the right of the people to keep and bear arms.

So, if I'm not using it, it should be turned in?  Like hell ... it's better off for the govt, not me, sitting around or not.

The last gun buy back program was run by local clergy, not the police.

There are mixed results. They say that crime in the nation as a whole, is down and yet gun sales are soaring. And in certain areas like Camden who also had a gun buyback program, they have seen a rise in gun related crimes.

Brooklyn has seen a decrease in crime since their buyback program, but they attribute that to the changing neighborhoods.  There has been a renaissance in many parts of Brooklyn over the past decade.

And is there proof that any of these guns were actually 'on the streets'?

I guess anything is worth a try in hopes for the best results. But unfortunately you can't legislate a 'mind thought'.

But at least the governor has recognized and is addressing the gun related crimes in Schenectady.

MT - Don't be foolish.  It's not about the 2nd Amendment.  The point I am making is that if someone has a firearm that may not be the ones a gun buyback is targeting but is just lying aound - it might be a good idea to turn it in if there is a chance it could fall into the wrong hands.

The government could care less if you want have the gun laying around. But, the fact is, a lot of the poeple who turn in guns, are turning in guns that fall into that category -  just sitting around collecting dust.
