Re Feb. 22 letter, “Honoring of Whitney Houston was distasteful,” by David DeVries: While I do agree that much of the hoopla surrounding her funeral seemed over the top, I also think that using such epithets as “obscene” and “criminal” to describe her life and death are also over the top. Do you really want to get in bed with [Fox News political commentator] Bill O’Reilly and people of that ilk? I found the more human approach by [MSNBC political analyst] Lawrence D’Donnell in a recent show a lot more meaningful. Yes, all of us should be responsible for our own lives, and yes, individual choice does play an important part in how we live our lives and treat those around us. But to ignore environmental factors such as the high price media stars like Whitney Houston pay for their celebrity, much less the very real addictive power of hard drugs, is to miss the point and indulge in moralistic fi nger pointing, something the hard right is very good at. While I was never a big fan of Whitney Houston, I did appreciate the power of her voice and the success she enjoyed, and casting aspersions on her after her death, as Bill O’Reilly has done, seems unseemly at the very least. Having a serious conversation about hard drugs and their effect on celebrities like Whitney Houston and others is something we ought to have, and there I find common ground with O’Reilly, which doesn’t happen very often! Throwing around words like “obscene,” “criminal,” “lowlifes,” and “absurd” misses the point and doesn’t get us very far.
