Schenectady police: Man talked out of jumping from bridge

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - The Schenectady Police Department says they successfully talked a male from jumping off the Cotton Hollow Factory Bridge on Monday morning.

Police say around 10:00 a.m. they received numerous calls that a male, whose identity will not be released, had climbed over the safety fence of the bridge. Officers arrived on scene to discover a Schenectady resident on the top of the fence threatening to jump.

Around 10:30 a.m. police, with the assistance of family members, talked the man into climbing down from the fence.

He was taken into custody under Mental Health Law without incident and was transported to Ellis Hospital for an evaluation. No criminal charges will be filed.

I-890 was shut down in both directions for the duration of the incident.

Teen safe after threatening to jump from bridge

SCHENECTADY -- A 17-year-old youth, upset over a domestic incident, threatened to jump off a bridge above Interstate 890 Monday night.

Police responded to the vicinity of Altamont and Duane Avenues about 7:30 p.m. where they spotted the teen sitting on top of a fence on the bridge and threatening suicide.

Police said the youth had called the police department and stated he was going to kill himself by jumping off of the bridge onto I890.

Traffic on I-890 was stopped in both directions as officers talked to the youth, convincing him to come down from the fence a short time later.

The teen, whose identity was not released, was uninjured. He was taken to Ellis Hospital for a psychiatric evaluation, police said.
