SCHENECTADY COUNTY
Officer cited for tough task of eviction
Williams present when people lose homes
BY SARA FOSS Gazette Reporter

Whenever Schenectady County residents are evicted, sheriff’s Deputy Donald Williams is present.
Sometimes the residents are still sleeping and he tells them to get dressed. He pokes his head inside the closets to make sure nobody is hiding, and if the residents are upset, he tries to keep things calm. He has encountered pit bulls and uncovered puppy mills. He has evicted businesses whose employees didn’t even know they were about to lose their jobs.
“Every situation is different,” Williams said.
Last month Williams was awarded the New York State Sheriffs’ Association Civil Deputy of the Year Award for his work processing evictions.
A 22-year veteran of the Schenectady County Sheriff’s Department, Williams has spent 12 years processing evictions for the department and for the past three years has been the sole offi cer managing evictions. In 2011, he processed an all-time high of 774 evictions in Schenectady County. During a recent interview, he referred to the crowbar under his desk as “the key to the city.”
Christopher O’Brien, the executive director of the state Sheriffs’ Association, said that one of the things that impressed his organization was the sheer number of evictions Williams had processed. “The volume of evictions he’s done is staggering,” he said. “It’s a sad commentary on the economy, but it’s also just a huge amount.”
Schenectady County Sheriff Dominic Dagostino echoed this, saying, “We’ve seen an increase in evictions because of the economic crisis.”
DIFFICULT JOB
Williams said he was initially shocked by the number of evictions in Schenectady County and it took him a little bit of time to get used to ordering families to leave their homes.
“Sometimes it’s hard,” Williams said. “When there are a lot of children involved, it wears on you. The hardest part is when the kids look at me and want to blame me.”
Many of the people he evicts are struggling because of situations they have no control over, such as medical problems, while others are serial problem renters who bounce from place to place, Williams said. He said he often winds up evicting the same people over and over again and witnessing the gradual deterioration of their living conditions.
“There are some people I might evict two or three times this year,” he said. “I do know who they are.”
He said he sometimes fi nds himself angered by the conditions parents are letting their kids live in.
“There’s good landlords and bad landlords and good tenants and bad tenants,” Williams said. “I can sympathize with both tenants and landlords, but I try to stay neutral.” ......................>>>>.......................>>>>>..........................http://www.dailygazette.net/De.....r01102&AppName=1

Evictions generate revenue for Schenectady County. Dagostino estimated that the sheriff’s department makes about $300,000 processing evictions each year — money that goes directly into the county’s general fund.

It pays the bills!!!!

See.....it does benefit the liberal socialist dem's to have a 'created' scumbag, dumbed down society!!!

Yeah - Metroplex is working.

The Obamanomics cheerleaders will say that if not for Metroplex the number of evictions would be even higher.

(It is true that this is not just an indication of the overall decline of our civilization within this country - but the fact is that Metroplex was supposed to lower taxes, increase jobs - not just be a handout to downtown businesses)

Proof positive that no one wants to live in the City. A majority of the homes in the City turn into rentals because a middle class family could NEVER afford the taxes and slumlords have the Section 8 office on speed dial.

THEN, when taxes and fees keep increasing each year, even the 'respectable' landlords have to make do with ANYONE. Sex offenders, parolees, the pitbull owner...because who else is going to live here? You have to pay your mortgage and taxes somehow.

Until the crime, the gangs, the school district and the fiscal abuse from McCarthy and followers ends - Schenectady will continue its decline.

Having the "most" evictions is sickening.

I see the the folks that jump from place to place all the time right across the streets here.  Been watching it for years.  Every 9 months there is a turn over....Move in, Time Warner truck shows up connects the cable.  Next day the rental center truck.  Nine months later out they go....tenant pays the rent for 3 month, then 3 months not paying it then 3 months till eviction gets near.  Not a bad deal.

So figure near a year of paying only 3 months rent then living free for 6.

Here is an example of one family I know of personally.  The person's daughter does this all the time.  Now the cable bill is her fathers name.  But she has used her kids names, her sister's names, friends names to open the accounts and just leaves the one she owes on forgotten.  Has TW digital, phone, RR the whole works.

Owes over 5K to National Grid, no kidding. They have her on a special payment plan.  Wonder why our cable and utility bills are so high?  Figure out how much the companies lose providing services in Schenectady.

She uses every entitlement she can. Wick, Food stamps, Medicaid.  Does not work because the county says taking care of the kids and going to work at the same time is too much for her to handle  . The kids that are eligible for it are on SSI due to health reasons. The youngest is going to nursery school 5 days a week paid for by the county and she sits around all day, no kidding, wish I was.  The latest apartment is totally trashed as were the previous ones.  They have pets that mess up all around the apartment, the kids and her too lazy to take them out.

This women keeps getting pregnant and has had well over half a dozen abortions paid for by the county.

All the fathers are drug addicts and or drunks. A different father for each kid.  Her mom or the fathers of these take the kids on the weekends.  When the fathers need more drugs and booze they work at jobs under the table, so no child support has to be paid either. No legit job, no paying child support. They drive around borrowing the woman's car, yep she has one, even though all the fathers licenses have been revoked.

She thinks nothing of pushing the kids off to one of the fathers on weekends even though his latest girlfriend had all their kids taken away from her by the county, not a good sign.  All these guys do is drink and drug all day...

Her father helps her move out just before they think the Sheriff is going to come.  Midnight move.

She ticks me off big time. 2nd generation welfare. Oh, by the way mom's on SSI, Sec 8, Food stamps, Heap, the whole nine yards.

I am not saying all of the folks evicted are like this I am just sharing about the apartments around my place and this one family I know of.

This are the type of folks this guy sees all the time..

What is saddening is those losing their houses.  Those folks must have been holding jobs to buy them.  They are the ones I hope he shows compassion and a kind demeanor to during the process.  I hope the job has not hardened his heart after meetings so many folks like some of my neighbors and this girl.

Is this county employee reporting all these parents to CPS when he does these evictions ??????

Is the dem county DSS/CPS removing all these children from these living conditions ?????

Doubt it.

Not in the particular case I pointed out above. Hasn't removed the kids yet!!!. The woman has cps involved but her family can never get a call back when they want to let cps how bad it is getting.  The worker is overwhelmed with cases I can only assume since this situation is getting worse and worse each day. The schools are involved and even they must have their hands tied.

This woman is smart enough to outrun this sheriff but I sure hope when he catches them something is done, he pushes to see these kids are removed.  He has a responsibility to protect doesn't he!!

This is what occurs in every "renaissance". Churches close, 800+ abandoned properties, resale values tank 40%, murder at 8AM Downtown a block from Proctor's, State below Erie Boulevard totally vacant, body fly from knocked down building, pit bull attacks, foreclosures and evictions at Great Depression levels. Keep the implosion going! Nothing to discuss here. Let's move on.

I am NOT at all amused about your insensitivity toward those less fortunate..   Perhaps the general population should know that the financially BROKE GOP  -- as it's very last resort to tear DOWN the community -- are the posters behind the hate, negativity and racism found on this forum......   The local media would be proud to expose you for what you are ---- Despicable TWITS...

This news travels fast! The scum flock to schenectady because they know they can get away with just about anything.....including and not restricted to murder!!! Schenectady has become the 'drug capital' of NY! Nice, huh? And while the impotent elected official and the cheerleading gazetto continue to try to cover up the 'facts'....the roads will continue to be paved with drugs, crime and the 'created' dumbed down society!
