It is more than obvious that there are some government positions that require a tax paid car. But there are MANY the obviously DO NOT!!! Many tax paid cars are given out as a 'perk'....not out of necessity.

If this were the private sector, who ran their business on 'profits'.....then it can be 'a car for all'. But when it comes to the taxpayer's money, the power that be should be reluctant to spend even one dime of their money....UNLESS.....it was an absolute necessity. I don't see that as the case in Schenectady. It's 'a car for all' at the taxpayer's expense. Shameful!

Unadulterated Schenectady/facebook
This savvy GV resident is ON CALL so he has to take a City Owned Truck home to park in his driveway. Or get groceries, or run out to get snacks or whatever. And lets not forget those cigs.

"Car for All" - absolutely. And this is just ONE of HUNDREDS of abuses ....and thank you Vince Riggi for starting to put an end to the throwing away of taxpayer money.

WHY does the City pay triple in taxes - for crap like this. Free cars for people breaking the residency requirements and living in other towns. And why do they live in other towns ...BECAUSE THEY CAN'T AFFORD THE TAXES!!!

It's so pathetic.....

Make cop SUV issue moot by enforcing city’s residency law

Re Jan. 25 editorial, “Sch’dy vehicle study long overdue”: I have been reading with interest the controversy over the requested purchase of two Chevy Tahoes for use by crime scene technicians, and their need to drive those vehicles to their homes.
While saving taxpayers money is an important consideration, I believe the larger issue is employees (administration, police, fire, etc.) who work for this city but live outside it being allowed to do so. If you live in the community you serve, you would normally have a vested interest in quality-of-life issues, schools, delivery of services, elected officials and so on. You would be paying taxes in that municipality and shopping in its stores.
As it stands now, many city employees put in their eight hours and leave for homes in other parts of the county and, in some cases, other counties. Logically, their interest lies with their community, not Schenectady.
The solution is simple, yet challenging: The city needs to enforce residency laws that already exist. Every effort should be made to fi nd qualifi ed city residents for all city jobs.
If, after a truly exhaustive search, no qualifi ed individuals emerge, then the person hired would be required to move into the city within a two-year period. Otherwise, their contract with the city would be terminated.

What a great idea you would have thought those running the city could have thought of it.

letter is based on unproven assumption - that individuals who live outside the community would be less committed to
the city. - there is no proof of that.

and it fails to take into consideration the possibilty that by requiring all city employees to live in the city those
employees would become more involved in city politics. in a city in which 4000 or so votes can win a council seat
what would be the consequence of 150 police and 120 firefighters and their families and friends becoming a
political force in city politics.

If the police and fire fighters lived in the city and had to pay the ridiculously high taxes maybe they would take an interest in how the city was run and what the taxes were used for. As a side note they would also be paying taxes to help fund their salary and benefits as well as spending less on gas and wear and tear on the cars they drive.

two of the biggest fiscal challenges for the city are health insurance and pensions.  pensions are determined at the state level and health insurancevrates are similarlynunaffected by where the officers live

this idea is great in theory only...sorry to say! There are many out there who live in the city like Kosiur, and pay taxes.....yet after he failed miserably in the last election, he willing accepted an $80K+, government created needless position...of course at the taxpayer's expense. Believe me....they don't give a crap!!!

As long as they are receiving a paycheck with a padded pension and healthcare benefits FOR LIFE...they don't and won't see beyond that!!

However the way the pension is calculated and the way that the city is operated is in the councils hands.  They also have the power to change the amounts that are contributed by the employee.  5% is a joke.  Why bother.
