Alliance Party ready to grow By ROGER HULL, Commentary Published 10:46 p.m., Monday, January 23, 2012
The Alliance Party "lost" last fall's election in Schenectady. We won just one of the four City Council races and I lost the mayor's race by 89 votes. Or did we lose?
Our goal was to provide real competition in a city long dominated by one-party rule; we did. But for a quirk in state law that, not surprisingly, is stacked against independent efforts like ours, we would have won a second council seat. And, if 45 people had voted differently, we would have captured the mayor's office. Not bad for a "party" formed in my living room less than 30 months ago.
Where do we go from here?
The Republican Party, long dormant in Schenectady, is trying to regroup; significant numbers of Democrats are, obviously, unhappy with the powers-that-be; and "blanks" like me still see a need to try to bring people together across party lines.
While the jury is clearly out on what the future will hold, I strongly feel the Alliance Party effort needs to continue.
Next fall, we plan to field a candidate for City Council to fill the position vacated by Mayor Gary McCarthy. Given the fact the election will be held in a presidential year, and given the overwhelming Democratic edge in registration, it will be a tough fight. However, it will be a fight that will be repeated the following year when McCarthy's unexpired term is up, so, whoever runs on our ticket will be well known by 2013..................>>>>.....................>>>>...............Read more: http://www.timesunion.com/opinion/article/Alliance-Party-ready-to-grow-2681644.php#ixzz1kTNbWQJu
GOOD FOR THEM!!! Anyone who is seeking equal representation, against a one party rule, should start supporting the Alliance party now!!

Perhaps there is a phone booth for them to hold their next meeting in ---- I prefer to see them in a mental asylum -- however the rest of society has not seen the light in this regard ... some day they will.

Alliance Party has never been more alive, or needed, in Sch’dy
Re: April 14 article, “Party denies interest waning”: I would like to paraphrase Mark Twain and say, “the demise of the Alliance Party has been greatly exaggerated.” In addition to the active people mentioned in the article, many are waiting in the wings to work toward the only city race this year. This summer and fall, as last year, volunteers will be collecting signatures and campaigning for the Alliance — and Republican-endorsed candidate for City Council, Rich Patierne. The Alliance Party is committed to fi nding and supporting candidates that exhibit independent, bipartisan thought, and show respect for and provide a voice for the residents of this city. In [coming close in] last year’s mayoral race, and by winning a City Council seat, the Alliance Party proved that there are a signifi cant number of voters who support this principle. The fact that Andy Chestnut has had some of his former supporters refuse to help him in his re-election bid for school board because he was involved in the Alliance effort clearly shows that intolerant partisan views still exist. Those actions disgust those of us who believe that our freedom to choose political candidates should be without punitive actions by those who disagree. Those actions reaffirm the reason for the Alliance Party [to exist].
JACQUELINE A. HURD Schenectady The writer was an unsuccessful Alliance candidate for City Council.
A two party system is needed in Rotterdam and Niskayuna as well. One party never works-ask North Koreans about that. Same with the City school's and SCORE. The fact that most SCORE "leaders" are DEM hacks should surprise no one. Mr Chestnut should worry less about eyesore signs and more about returning residents calls.
Re Kathleen Moore’s April 14 article, “Party denies interest waning”: Anyone who has worked with Roger Hull knows that he does not begin anything frivolously. The Alliance Party was founded to address many important issues facing Schenectady, one being the impact of one-party rule. That the Alliance Party placed a candidate on the City Council and that Roger Hull came close to being mayor illustrate that he is a person who perseveres — and that the city was ready for change. Mr. Hull has all intentions of keeping the Alliance Party going. However, he is also involved in other projects, not to mention family obligations. What was bothersome to me is that Ms. Moore’s article portrayed Mr. Hull as someone who has let the Alliance Party falter and no longer has interest in supporting its mission since he lost the mayoral race. Stating that the Alliance Party website has not been updated and using a quote by [Councilman] Vince Riggi (in response to his lack of contact with Hull) to close the article leads readers to think that the Alliance Party is defunct.” Really. Perhaps a more fi tting headline for the article would have been, “The denigration of the Alliance Party,” by Kathleen Moore.
