Thanks to the wonderful work of so many folks -- Schenectady's Downtown is being reborn as a vibrant and wonderful place to shop, visit, work and live.   Let's raise a glass of the finest New York State wine or beer and toast  the RENAISSANCE.

"Downtown" by Petula Clark

When you're alone and life is making you lonely
You can always go - downtown
When you've got worries, all the noise and the hurry
Seems to help, I know - downtown
Just listen to the music of the traffic in the city
Linger on the sidewalk where the neon signs are pretty
How can you lose?
The lights are much brighter there
You can forget all your troubles, forget all your cares
So go downtown, things'll be great when you're
Downtown - no finer place, for sure
Downtown - everything's waiting for you
Don't hang around and let your problems surround you
There are movie shows - downtown
Maybe you know some little places to go to
Where they never close - downtown
Just listen to the rhythm of a gentle bossa nova
You'll be dancing with him too before the night is over
Happy again
The lights are much brighter there
You can forget all your troubles, forget all your cares
So go downtown, where all the lights are bright
Downtown - waiting for you tonight
Downtown - you're gonna be all right now
[Instrumental break]
And you may find somebody kind to help and understand you
Someone who is just like you and needs a gentle hand to
Guide them along
So maybe I'll see you there
We can forget all our troubles, forget all our cares
So go downtown, things'll be great when you're
Downtown - don't wait a minute for
Downtown - everything's waiting for you
Downtown, downtown, downtown, downtown ...

I think Alias and I can do something to live'n that song up if you want, DV.

"While Foreign Terrorists were plotting to murder and maim using homemade bombs in Boston, Democrap officials in Washington DC, Albany and here were busy watching ME and other law abiding American Citizens who are gun owners and taxpayers, in an effort to blame the nation's lack of security on US so that they could have a political scapegoat."

Well, we like fulfilling requests, DV. Please feel free to make more requests. We will make sure we deliver!

When you've got connections
To the Democrat Party
You can get free dough downtown
Then you've no worries,
and you've the truth you can bury
Seems to help, I know, downtown

Just listen to the jingle of the payoffs in the city
Vagrants on the sidewalk where the urine stains aint pretty
TaxPAYERS lose!

The Plex has the power there
They can hide all the troubles, pretend that that care and be
Downtown, Millionaires(Ronny is) waiting for
Downtown, Condos next to the sewer,
Downtown, Metroplex schilling for
(Downtown)

Instr. bridge

Shift all the taxes
To the rest of the town
there are Dog and Pony shows downtown
Maybe you know
Some politicians to go to
When all the banks are closed downtown

listen to the rhythm of a gentle assault rifle
We'll be dodgin' bullets, out in front of Bombers

Grab your wallet again

Taxbreaks are much bigger there
Millionaires have no trouble, with taxpayer funded meals
Downtown if you know how to grease the wheel,
Downtown, Our leaders know how to steal,
Downtown, Metroplex runs the whole dealllll
(Downtown downtown)

*Purple=alternative lyric

PS- I left off the final chorus. I like the Nelson Riddle arrangement better.

ps- Tony Hatch wrote the song, not Petula Clark.

Alias, I wanted him to feel special. I figured he would appreciate it more if he believed it was his special "request!"

Now I thought he had an imagination, a really wild imagination, because only in one's imagination does downtown and the city seem good.

But again, with home values so extremely low, and mortgage rates about the lowest in history, and McC getting Key bank to give out mortgatges far in excess of the purchase price or value of the house, you'd think this guy who thinks Schenectady is improving would jump on the chance to buy and live in the city now.   But it's obviously only in his imagination because he refuses to take advantage of all the giveaways.

speak up for the people rather than the politicos and their rich cronies.

They have begun taking down buildings for new condominiums along Union Street and new offices along Broadway ---- as the weather warms up expect MORE positive news as Schenectady's Renaissance continues  !!!
