SCHENECTADY MLK Day menu offends some College officials to meet students BY JUSTIN MASON Gazette Reporter
Fried chicken and collard greens aren’t foods that generally stir negative emotions. The traditional Southern dishes might be called soul food or comfort cuisine on most days. But when the items appeared on a special cafeteria menu during the national day of remembrance for Martin Luther King Jr., they took a very different meaning for some Union College students. Union’s West Dining Hall featured a special “dream in green” menu Monday that drew snickers from some students recognizing the racial overtones of food stereotypically associated with black people. Others viewed the meal as making a mockery of a day meant to celebrate freedom from racial prejudice and stereotyping. Freshman Isabelle Edwards found it ironic that the dining hall would offer a menu with clear racial connotations on a day when the rest of the campus was hosting activities aimed at commemorating the civil rights leader. “Yes, as a student body and community as a whole, we should be beyond the immediate association of African Americans and fried chicken, or other stereotypes, and yet, tonight demonstrated that we are not,” she said in a blog post Tuesday. “The association is still there. And that was really upsetting to realize.” Monday’s menu also included cornbread, pulled pork and Cajun-style rice and beans. The meal was apparently offered only at the West Dining Hall, which serves freshman students on campus. Contacted Thursday, Edwards said she doesn’t suspect the menu was intended as a joke or to stir ill will, yet she remains dumbfounded that the dining service didn’t foresee some students taking offense to it. “I don’t think it’s malicious whatsoever,” said Edwards, who is black. “There may have been good intentions, but there was a bad outcome.” Union’s dining services are managed by Sodexo. The company hired David Gaul as its director of dining on the campus last spring. Gaul did not return calls for comment Thursday. Earlier this week, he told Union’s campus newspaper that the menu was chosen independent of Sodexo and “without intent to upset anybody.” ..................>>>>.....................>>>>......................http://www.dailygazette.net/De.....r01103&AppName=1

Yeah, I went to a Columbus Day dinner once and was pissed off that they had the nerve to try to feed me food stereotypically associated with Italian people! ZITIS AND MEATBALLS! I was expecting roast turkey or Yankee pot roast! WTF! However the Gazetto would not hear my complaints and did not find it newsworthy
"While Foreign Terrorists were plotting to murder and maim using homemade bombs in Boston, Democrap officials in Washington DC, Albany and here were busy watching ME and other law abiding American Citizens who are gun owners and taxpayers, in an effort to blame the nation's lack of security on US so that they could have a political scapegoat."
Personally, I prefer a Scandinavian meal on DISCOVERY DAY -- as for fried chicken and collards on MLK Day ... that is not really inappropriate because it is a menu enjoyed by people of all races down south. Mr. Mason apparently had a slow news day and a deadline to file "anything" that might pass as a news story.

Funny how the gazetto prints a useless article like this one. And it wasn't a 'slow' day.....it is 'news as usual' for the gazetto!!

That is obvious after reading the hate-filled posts by the nayboobs after my well-thought out and amiably-worded post on this thread topic. Apparently, the nayboobs insist in wallowing in the cesspool of their hatred and stupidity.

I think what bothered them most was the pack of Newports, and 40oz malt liquor that were being served with each meal. That, and the macaroni and government cheese appetizers that were served during the Step in Fetch it film that was playing.
I thought ending the evening by taking a fire hose to the rich white folk for gettin all uppity was a bit over the top though.
