DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) – An in-development Microsoft smart phone app designed to help drivers and pedestrians avoid unsafe neighborhoods is proving controversial among some minority rights groups that find the software potentially discriminatory.

The as-of-yet unnamed product is being referred to as the “Avoid The Ghetto” app by those who are concerned with where it will guide users.

Why doesn't it surprise me that  "the pretender" would be promoting such an obviously racist tool ?--- I bet he will market them alongside the white sheets and pointy hats in his store.

This app would completely eliminate Schenectady from their maps.

you are saying it's racist because you assume that 'other people' different than yourself live there and are probably some special ethnicity/religion or quite possibly different political/social leaning
than yourself.....

who cares if they are different....if the neighborhood they chose to build/live in allows very obvious dangerous behavior, it's their choice to do so and it's my choice to find out and avoid it...

oh wait a minute...so are you also saying that the TSA is wrongly applying an APP that is offensive/racist/stupid?????

maybe the TSA or the local police dept would like to 'man the gates' of these so called ghettos to assure us that the government is aware of our stupid need for safety, hence they are
aware of the problem and looking into it.....

this is a strange circle-jerk you have brought up Hamburg.......

Crime Rates: Discover the Safest Neighborhoods in any City
• Subscribe and Get Exclusive Neighborhood Crime Rates & Data
• Learn How to License Our Crime Data for Your Business
• Example Crime Report

Maps are complimented by detailed crime data developed exclusively by NeighborhoodScout's statisticians and geographers (example is Boston, MA).

Discover the lowest crime neighborhoods in any city or town, before you buy a home or site a facility. Additionally, discover the types (violent or property) of crimes common to any particular neighborhood. Our exclusive crime data are developed for each neighborhood using our mathematical algorithms and municipal crime statistics from the FBI and the U.S. Justice Department.

Subscribers get instant access to see where the lowest crime rate areas are located.

What our crime search provides

NeighborhoodScout reveals the safety from crime for every neighborhood in America, and shows you how each neighborhood compares to other neighborhoods nationwide, so you can make good decisions for your family or your company's location needs.

Users can search by overall crime rate, property crime rate, violent crime rate, or crimes per square mile. Users can specify any search area they need - by distance around a city or around a specific address (1 to 75 miles in any direction), by state, or nationwide.

Crime maps are complimented by detailed data. We show both the number of crimes and crime rate per 1,000 residents for violent crime, property crime, and total crime, for each neighborhood. Neighborhood crimes are compared in a graph to the overall crime rate for the city containing the neighborhood, the state crime rate, and the national median for both violent and property crime. We also provide an individual's chance of becoming a victim of either violent or property crime within any neighborhood, and show that comparison to the overall city and the state. Finally, we have calculated the crime density - which is the number of crimes per square mile - for each neighborhood, city, and state, and present this information in a table for ease of comparison.

The crime rates we have developed are based on data and crime statistics from the FBI and the U.S. Justice Department. We gather data from all 17,000 local law enforcement agencies in the United States, and use a relational database to associate crime incidences from all of these law enforcement agencies to the specific local communities the agency covers, and hence in which community the crimes have occurred. We then researched and developed mathematical algorithms to statistically estimate the incidences of both violent and property crimes for each neighborhood in America. This project took nearly 6-months to complete. The resultant formulae produce numbers of crimes and crime rates for neighborhoods with upwards of 87% accuracy in most cases. We use a total of twenty different formulas to increase the accuracy of our estimates, and apply them based on city or town characteristics, to produce the best model fit in each case.

About the Crime Data

The data used from these 17,000 local law enforcement agencies are the FBI defined "crime index" crimes. Index crimes are the eight crimes the FBI combines to produce its annual crime index.

The index seeks to overcome differences in individual state statues - that would ignore how the individual is charged - and create a standardized definition of crime classification. This was done through defining serious and non-serious offenses. Part I crimes are comprised of serious felonies and Part II crimes are comprised of non-serious felonies and misdemeanors. Together these two types of classifications make up the crimes reported in the Uniform Crime Reports.

These offenses include willful homicide, forcible rape, robbery, burglary, aggravated assault, larceny over $50, motor vehicle theft, and arson. In order to compare statistical information on a national basis the FBI came up with a common definition for crime comparison.

Crime data reporting from local law enforcement agencies to the Federal Government, and what it means to you

It is important to note that local law enforcement agencies voluntarily report their crime data and incidences to the FBI and U.S. Justice Department. More often than we would expect, the local agency will err in the numbers they report, or possibly withhold information that would reflect less than favorably on their agency, or their community.

Crime rates and tourist areas

Crime rates can appear higher than you think if you have a lot of tourists (non-permanent residents) in your community, because the number of crimes (violent, property, or both) is divided by the permanent population, creating a crime rate per 1,000 residents. If you have a lot of visitors, these people can increase the number of crimes, but do not count in establishing the rate because they don't live there, thus increasing the crime rate score per 1,000 residents. Therefore it is always valuable to look at both the crime rate, and the actual reported or estimated number of crime incidences in the neighborhood or community.

Church abuse statistics are staggering

Ruminations: random thoughts from a man on the edge

By Brett Henley

Published: Wednesday, April 5, 2006

Updated: Monday, November 8, 2010 09:11

The Gavin Group, a private firm responsible for a recent audit of Catholic Dioceses in the U.S., discovered a stark and shocking number of sexual abuse cases, in fact, far more than previously reported. The Coalition of Catholics and Survivors, an organization dedicated to victim's rights in church abuse cases, revealed very specific indications of additional and repeated problems within the Boston diocese.

The most significant: change in policies in 2003 and 2004 have shown absolute neglect by the Archdiocese regarding victim therapy, and denied rights to victims trying to access information from internal investigations of sex abuse crimes. The diocese was absolutely and vehemently secretive regarding the number of claims filed in the Boston area, a concern mirrored by the recent annual audits revealing more than 12,000 cases of abuse since 1950. What's even more disturbing is the sheer cost of supplying settlements, victim therapy and legal support. According to an Associated Press article, pocket pains were estimated at more than $460 million in 2005, and well over $1 billion in 55 years. After 2002, several church leaders promised to conduct vigilant audits of the inner workings of over 195 individual diocese annually.

The fact that diocese are implementing safety training courses to educate children in abuse prevention is a bit more troubling than the statistics would indicate. If $1 billion isn't enough of a wake-up call for the Catholic Church, then subsequent audits over the next few years will hopefully yank the blinders off. The implications are daunting.

For an institution dating back to the Great Roman Empire - it's roots lie even further in the early influence of Pagan culture and it's destruction in the tidal wave of global Christian conformism - Catholicism has far too much deep-rooted history to change overnight. Such terms as "procreative process" and "holy matrimony" leave little if any room for the Church to exist outside of tradition. It is a testament to black and white constituting the fabric of Catholicism's interpretation of the world we live in.

Ironically, and probably the most difficult aspect of the religion for me to swallow, is the vow of celibacy and chastity required of every deacon hoping to become a priest. The word "priest" is derived from Greek and Latin, it's meaning floating between "elder" and "superintendent," implying a social status of powerful prominence, nearly suggesting a sort of holy super hero closer to deity than human. So why is that 12,000 sexually abused children have been largely ignored by the Roman Catholic Church until the millennium passed? Now the skeletons have rattled their way noisily into the conscience of Americans, Catholic and atheist alike, Christian and non-secular, and a whole avalanche of dirty secrets buried within the holy mortar of churches everywhere threatens to break loose.

Though my Catholic roots tug at the strings of memories as a child, especially sitting through Sunday School and Christmas Masses, and wondering what all this fervent dedication to an ideal was really about. Personally, I can't stomach a man, "married to God," placing the trust of my entrance into matrimony in the hands of an institution expecting it's genial, hallowed fingers to thumb through the pages of our lives in but a few hours, and ensure a safe and successful journey through the obstacles and toils of marriage.

The elders are, after all, humans beings. Shedding their chaste skin would reveal very real tendons of displaced animal emotion, buried deep in the tradition and dedication of their holy post. Part of me wishes I could shake off the implication of 12,000 victimized, defiled young children, their feral nightmares clinging to both subconscious and conscious worlds, and the trust they placed in holy men, crumbled like dust to be swept underneath hundreds of tainted altars throughout the Catholic community. Part of me wishes I could look at a Catholic church in passing, and appreciate the beauty of what once seemed to be a foundation of solidified virtue. Now, between the condemnation of gay marriage, the sacrilege of so many human tendencies, expecting us to live in a holy vacuum, and the statistical cacophony of sexual terrorism, I find it quite difficult not to shake my head in disappointment.

ANOTHER NEW APP ON THE HORIZON:

Troll types

There are 3 types of trolls: Mountain, Cave and Hill trolls. There are slight differences between them as far as height is concerned, which means that different eq fits different trolls.
Tracker & Weapon Troll (for pk)

These trolls can track quicker because of more INT and PER, but STR lowered to 20-23. Trolls with track are not common though because usually trolls ask bns when tracking is necessary.
For more information about stats and mechanisms behind them please go to forum discussion: http://mume.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=1241

Avoiding Sundeath

1. Have at least all the months substituted (meaning knowing when dusk and dawn is).

Also it useful to have a timer which tells you how many minutes till either dusk or dawn. Example:

TIME: 2pm -=|NIGHT: 9pm DAWN: 5am|=-

2. Know the zone you are playing in - the dark and sunny spots. This is especially needed when dealing with enemy races.
3. Moveless troll is a dead troll - have orkish draughts for emergencies- just to get to dark spot before sun comes up. Also, maximize your wilderness skill latest on hero level - always!

4. Dont be greedy when exping in open

5. Always be already close to your favoured dark spot when you get the 'sun will rise in a minute' message.

6. When following - make sure your leader is qualified to lead and warn him when time is of short supply and urge him to go into dark spot.

7. When PKing - pukes will know that you wont risk fleeing when sunny exit is near and almost always fight and/or lure you there (cowardly and dishonorable like they are).

8. After you have taken a fight next to the sun exit (see previous step), remember always to change your wimpy flee to 0 "cha wim 0" to avoid accidental fleeing into the sun.

9. Dont Sunwalk - bad example here.

10. Be aware of the possibility that you can be slept by sleep spell. When you are not awaken, you can sundie when day begins. This is very rare practice because this is heavily frowned upon in small community. In order to avoid that happening though, you can try to avoid getting cast at in open rooms by people who are known to do that. You can also help to prevent that by having maximum willpower and wearing spell saving equipment.

There is nothing wrong with an app showing you where the high crime rate is in an area. There are statistics on line for every municipality stating crime stats. Where do you think the 'app' gets it's info from? DUH!

The app just saves ya time and you can access it on you smartphone with the touch of your finger.
